Mentzer, Walsh Earn Individual Awards as Seven Spartans Honored on All-Conference Team

Spartans Lead Commonwealth with Seven All-Conference Picks

NEWTOWN, Pa. - York College women's lacrosse team earned two major awards and six all-conference selections as the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) revealed its end-of-season Commonwealth women's lacrosse awards on Wednesday.

The Commonwealth champion Spartans led the league with seven All-MAC Commonwealth selections which is tied for the second-most in program history.

Sydney Mentzer garnered her first conference positional player of the year award and earned her fourth first team all-conference selection, becoming just the second player in program history in the Commonwealth era to earn first-team honors all four years. The senior is a true midfielder who filled up the stat columns across the board as she ranked top-five in the league in goals (50), points (76) and draw controls (88), in addition to ranking seventh in assists (26) and tied for sixth in caused turnovers (26).

Kate Walsh also earned her first conference positional player of the year award and first all-conference selection, while becoming just the first player in program history to earn the title of Commonwealth Defender of the Year. The senior helped lead the Spartans to the rank of the league's top scoring defense as they allowed a league-low 7.35 goals per game overall this season while allowing just 3.17 goals per game in regular season conference play. Walsh led York with a team-high 33 ground balls to go along with 14 caused turnovers on the season.

Krista Yarusso rounded out York's first-team selections as she earned her first all-conference nod. The senior attacker led the Spartans to league's top-ranked scoring offense as they racked up 15.00 goals per game this season and posted a league-best 19.33 goals per game against conference opponents. She ranked fifth in the Commonwealth with 33 total assists on the year and ranked sixth in the conference with 67 total points. Yarusso also led the Spartans with 24 points in regular season conference play.

All four of York's second team selections made their first appearance on the all-conference team. Kiera McPhillips ranked sixth in the league with 44 goals and eighth in total points with 60. Kate Feldman contributed in all areas of the field with 19 goals, 24 points, 32 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers and 51 draw controls. Bethany Stoltzfus and Audrey Simoes both stepped into starting roles and propelled the Spartan defense to the top of the conference. Stoltzfus caused 14 turnovers and picked up 17 ground balls as she emerged as a lock-down defender. Simoes led the league overall in goals-against average (7.75) and save percentage (.517), while posting double-digit saves five times including four games against top-25 opponents.

The Spartans will return to the field on Sunday at home in an NCAA Second Round contest at 1 p.m. The await the winner of a Farmingdale State vs. Wooster matchup from Saturday.
