Mentzer, Simoes Named IWLCA All-Americans

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Two members of the York College women's lacrosse team earned All-American honors as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) on Friday.

Spartan IWLCA All-American Selections
First Team
Sydney Mentzer - Midfield
Third Team
Audrey Simoes - Goalie

Senior Sydney Mentzer, the Commonwealth Midfielder of the Year and a First Team IWLCA All-Region selection, added the title of First Team All-American to her resume for the first time in her career to punctuate an illustrious season. Mentzer is a true midfielder who filled up the stat columns across the board while she led the ninth-ranked Spartans in goals (56), points (83), game-winning goals (5), caused turnovers (28) and draw controls (91). Her contributions this season helped the Spartans achieve a top-30 scoring offense (14.48 gpg) and a top-30 draw unit which controlled 58.8% of the draws throughout the year. She scored three or more goals in 14 of 21 games, while causing multiple turnovers in eight games and posted double-digit draw controls twice, including a career-best 15 against Roanoke which ranks as the second-most in program history in a single game.

Mentzer caps her decorated career all over the Spartan record book as she ranks tied for second in points (229), third in goals (178), sixth in ground balls (136), second in draw controls (272) and second in caused turnovers (108). She is the only Spartan to have the rare combination of 200 points and 200 draw controls in addition to being the only player in York history to have a value of 100+ in five different statistical categories. Additionally, Mentzer's 83 points this season tied for the third-most in program history, while she ranked just outside the top-five in goals, assists, draw controls and caused turnovers.

Junior Audrey Simoes, a First Team IWLCA All-Region selection, added a Third Team IWLCA All-American honor to her mantle for the first time in her career. The Spartan goalie put together a fantastic campaign in her first season as a starter as she ranked eighth in the nation in save  percentage (.513) and 25th in goals-against average (7.92) while leading the Metro Region in both of those categories. Her outstanding efforts highlighted a defensive unit which ranked 26th nationally in scoring defense as they surrendered just 7.52 goals per game throughout the season.

Simoes posted a pair of shutout appearances on the season and held 11 opponents, including a pair of nationally-ranked foes, to single-digits. She also compiled five double-digit save performances to go along with an additional five outings in which she posted nine saves. Through 40 career games and 19 starts, Simoes owns a stellar goals-against average of 6.80 with a 5.36 save percentage and 194 saves.

Mentzer and Simoes became the 20th and 21st different players in Spartan women's lacrosse program history to earn IWLCA All-American honors with Mentzer becoming just the seventh player to land on the First Team. Simoes continues the program's tradition of success at the goalie position as she became the fourth different Spartan netminder to achieve All-America status. York has had a goalie honored in five of the last six seasons.

York led the Commonwealth for the most All-American selections this season, while matching Franklin and Marshall and Haverford for the most in the Metro Region.
