#9 Women’s Lacrosse Falls at #3 Salisbury in NCAA Third Round

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 York women's lacrosse team saw their 2026 campaign come to close on Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship with a 10-5 loss at No. 3 Salisbury.

The Sea Gulls took command early with a 6-1 lead before the midway point of the second quarter which forced the Spartans to chase from behind the rest of the way. York played a solid defensive game while having plenty of offensive chances throughout with 13 of their 21 shots landing on target, but just could not string together enough tallies to fuel a comeback bid.

Team Records
#9 York: 16-5
#3 Salisbury: 19-0

How It Happened
Both goalies shined in the first half with Salisbury's Paige Ellis making a big impact in the first quarter. The Salisbury netminder made four big saves while facing seven total shots which propelled the Sea Gulls to a 4-1 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, Audrey Simoes' turn to stand on her head and she came up with four saves of her own after allowing a pair of early tallies. Simoes' efforts held the Gulls in check and the Spartans managed to get one back as they trailed 6-2 at the midway break.

The Spartans scored the first goal of the third quarter when Kiera McPhillips tallied with 10:22 left after she drove hard to the net and beat her defender in a one-on-one battle. That goal set cut York's deficit to three and shifted some momentum back to their favor, but the Spartans failed to capitalize as they committed turnovers on their next three possessions. The Sea Gulls tallied twice more in the quarter to extend their lead to 8-3, but Sydney Mentzer came through with a clutch goal in the final minute to make it an 8-4 game heading into the fourth quarter.

An Ellis save on a Riley Coltenback free-position shot with 8:19 was key for the Gulls as time began to slip away on the Spartans. Abby Tartal kept the game alive as she finished a feed from Coltenback with 5:43 left as York trailed by four with over five minutes left. The Spartans had a chance at taking another chunk out of the Salisbury lead, but instead York coughed it up with just over three minutes left. The Sea Gulls transitioned to their offensive zone and bled clock before Lauren Hackett delivered the knockout blow with 1:29 left for her second goal and fourth point of the day.
