Spartans Drop Pair in Final NCAA Tune Up

DALLAS, PA – The York College baseball team traveled to Misericordia University on Saturday for a pair of non-conference games prior to next week's NCAA Tournament. Unfortuantely for the Spartans, they dropped both games to the Cougars, falling 18-2 and 7-5.

The Cougars, who were the MAC Freedom champions, improve to 29-8. The two losses are the first time this year that York has lost two straight games. It snaps a five-game win streak for York as the Spartans are now 28-8 overall.

How it Happened

• The Cougars opened the escoring with a Sean Boylan two run homer with two outs in the first inning to take the early lead.

The Spartans tied the game at two in the top of the third as Austin Denlinger reached on a two-out error. Jack Barry then blasted his 19th home run of the year, tops in Division III.

• The Cougars then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third to seize control of the game. Misericordia added three runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to remove all doubt about the game one outcome.  

 

Spartan Leaders

Senior Jack Barry added another homer to his school record with his 19th blast of the year, a two run shot in the third … Jayden Cowan and Luke Turner had singles for the Spartans as York was held to three hits in game one.

How It Happened

• The Cougars struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. The Spartans tied the game in the fourth as Jimmy Wiegers led off the frame with a double to left. He moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Brett DeWees sacrifice fly to right.

• York took a 2-1 lead as Austin Denlinger blasted a solo homer to center for his 18th round tripper of the year.

• The Green and White plated a pair in the sixth as Brandon White doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, White moved to third on a wild pitch. He came around to score on a Craig Wiley RBI single to left center for the 3-1 York lead. Wiley moved to second on a ground out, to third on a passed ball and then scored on a Jayden Cowan single to right field as the York lead grew to 4-1.

• York tallied their fifth run in the seventh as Denlinger singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. He then scored when Joe Capobianco grounded out to short as York led 5-1.

• The Cougars got to the Spartan bullpen for four runs in the bottom of the seventh as they had three hits in the inning. York aided their cause with a hit batter, a walk and a balk.

• Misericordia got the game winner in the eight as Sean Boylan was hit by a pitch and then came home on a Derrick Vosburg two-run homer to right for the 7-5 lead.

• York got a one-out single from Cowan in the ninth but went quietly as they suffered their first back-to-back loss of the year.

 

Spartan Leaders

Senior Jayden Cowan led the Spartans with three hits while he also had an RBI  in the game … Austin Denlinger went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and his 18th home run of the lead as he is now one back of national leader Jack Barry … senior Brandon White had a pair of hits and a run scored … Craig Wiley was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored … Joe Capobianco was 1-for-4 with an RBI … Robert Chaney started ant went three innings, allowing a run on two hits in his final tune up before the NCAA Tournament … sophomore Zach Reed was outstanding as he threw three perfect innings with a strikeout for the Spartans.

 

Notes

The two games between the Spartans and the Cougars mark the first time the teams have played … senior Jack Barry now leads all of Division III in home runs and home runs per game while Austin Denlinger is second in both categories … the Spartans lead the nation in home runs per game at 1.53 dingers per contest … they are now third in total home runs with 54 in 36 games … the Spartans are 21st in the country in batting average at .340 heading into Saturday's games … the Spartans were held to a season-low three hits in the opener … game one was just the eighth time in 36 games that York failed to reach double figures in hits in a game … the three was the lowest hit total by four as the preview low was seven in York's 3-2 win over Hood on April 10 … the 18 runs allowed were a season high for the Spartan pitching staff.
