Baseball Sweeps Stevenson in Saturday Non-Conference Twin Bill

STEVENSON, MD – The York College baseball team ran their win streak to four with a twin bill sweep of Stevenson on the road Saturday in Stevenson, Maryland. The Spartans won game one 5-1 and completed the sweep with a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

The Spartans improve to 14-2 overall while the Mustangs fall to 8-6. Despite the fact both teams are members of the MAC Commonwealth, the two games were deemed non-conference contests by the league.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans got a pair of runs in the top of the first to seize an early lead. Joe Capobianco drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. The second tally came on a Mustang error.

• York made it 3-0 in the fourth on a Brandon White two-out RBI double to left.

• Stevenson nicked Spartan starter Brandon Haggerty for a run in the fifth as the Mustangs loaded the bases and a got a two-out infield single from Amani Jones, cutting the York lead to 3-1.

• York got a fourth run in the eighth as Jimmy Wiegers was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a Jayden Cowan infield single and came around to score on a wild pitch.

• The Spartans loaded the bases in the ninth and scored when Craig Wiley drew a walk to make it 5-1. The Mustangs turned a double play on the next hitter to end the Spartan uprising. The Mustangs went 1-2-3 in the ninth as Conor Miller notched the three inning save.

 

Spartan Leaders

Senior Brandon Haggerty picked up his fourth win of the year as he tossed six innings, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk … Conor Miller earned his third save of the year with three innings of one hit baseball while he struck out two … Jayden Cowan and Joe Capobianco led the offense with two hits each … Brandon White and Craig Wiley each went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Wiley also scored a run for York.

How It Happened:

• York kicked off the scoring in the third. Brandon White was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Junior shortstop Austin Denlinger hit the very next pitch over the left field wall for a two-run bomb and the 2-0 Spartan lead.

• York got back-to-back sacrifice flies from Jayden Cowan and White in the fourth as the lead grew to 4-0.

Stevenson climbed back in the game in the sixth with a three spot. The Mustangs got the first two runs on a Spartan error and then squeezed in a third to cut the York lead to one.

• Denlinger then gave York some insurance in the top of the seventh as he blasted his second home run of the day, a shot to left center with one out in the inning.

• The Spartan bullpen locked down the final three innings as Zach Stone and Tim Halasnik combined to toss three scoreless innings. Stone was perfect with two strikeouts in the seventh and eighth innings. Halasnik allowed one hit in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the year.

Senior Robert Chaney tossed 5.1 innings to pick up his third win of the year … Chaney allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts … senior Zach Stone threw two perfect innings in relief as he struck out two as he handled the seventh and eighth innings beautifully … senior Tim Halasnik earned his second save of the year as he allowed a hit in the ninth with two strikeouts … Austin Denlinger had his first multi-homer game of his career with his two round trippers … Denlinger now has four home runs for the year … Denlinger was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored … freshman Brett DeWees had his first collegiate double in the win … Joey Ricciardi made the start at DH and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

 

Notes

York has won three in the series against the Mustangs as they improve to 28-11 all-time against Stevenson … York has won four straight overall and five of their last six … the Spartans had their fourth multi-homer game of the year … Austin Denlinger had his first career multi-homer game and his nine total bases ties his career high from April 17, 2019 when he also had nine against Stevenson … Denlinger now has four home runs for the year which is a single season high for the junior shortstop … York has now scored exactly five runs in their last three games … York has been held to single digits in each of their last eight games but York is still 6-2 in those games … the Spartan pitching staff has allowed just 10 runs in their last four games … the Spartan hurlers posted 19 strikeouts in the two games including 10 in game one … York pitchers have five double digit strikeout games this year … the Spartans have six players in double figures in RBIs led by Jack Barry's 21 … York has out-homered their opponents 16-7 while they have doubled up their opponents in two-baggers at 41-20 … senior Brandon Haggerty is now 4-0 with a 2.16 ERA as he has struck out 34 in 25 innings of work … fellow senior lefty Robert Chaney is now 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in a team-high 26 innings of work.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 10 when they host Hood College in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. Game one at Jaquet Field is set for 12:00 pm.
