Spartans Sweep Saturday Pair from Alvernia

READING, PA – The York College baseball team closed out their four-game weekend series against Alvernia with a sweep in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday. York won a thriller in game one, 4-3, and completed the sweep with a solid 5-3 win in the nightcap. York took three of four from the Golden Wolves on the weekend. All four games were close as the two Friday games went extra innings and there were two one-run decisions in the series.

The Spartans improve to 12-2 overall and 10-2 in the league with the sweep. Alvernia falls to 7-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the MAC Commonwealth.

 

Game One

How It Happened:

• The Spartans struck first thanks to an Alvernia error and an RBI double from Austin Denlinger.

• The Golden Wolves threatened in the third as they had runners at second and third with one out but starter Robert Chaney got a strikeout and a line out to short to escape without any damage.

• Alvernia broke through in the fourth on a Brandon Smith two-run home run to left, giving Alvernia the 2-1 lead. The Golden Wolves pushed the lead to 3-1 on a Billy Dougar solo home run to center in the bottom of the fifth.

The Spartans looked dead in the water in the seventh as Alvernia starter Jake Reese was on his way to tossing a complete game victory. The Spartans were down to their final out when Jack Barry got the uprising started with a single to right. Joe Capobianco then ripped a triple to left center, scoring Barry and bringing the Spartan to within a run. Jimmy Wiegers then tied the game when he singled home Capobianco. Wiegers eventually came around to score the winning run on an infield single from Jayden Cowan as the Spartans recorded their third last-at-bat win of the year and second in as many days.

 

Spartan Leaders

Senior Tim Halasnik threw a perfect inning of relief to earn the save after picking up his first collegiate win on Friday in game one … AJ Vincenzi  earned the win as he relieved starter Robert Chaney with two outs in the sixth … Chaney threw well in the no decision as he allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 5.2 innings of work … Joe Capobianco had two hits including the huge seventh inning triple, his first triple of his Spartan career … Jayden Cowan hit lead off for the first time this year and went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI … Jimmy Wiegers stayed hot as he was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans struck first again in the top of the first. Brandon White walked, moved to second on an Austin Denlinger double and scored on a Luke Turner sacrifice fly.

• York made it 2-0 in the third as Brett DeWees singled to lead off the inning. Jayden Cowan doubled down the right field line, moving DeWees to third. White knocked in DeWees with an RBI single up the middle.

Alvernia tied the game in the bottom of the third as the Golden Wolves had four hits and scored a pair of runs. Spartan starter Josh Mann limited the damage as Alvernia left two runners stranded in the frame.

• The Green and White seized the lead for good in the fifth. White reached on the fielder's choice, stole second and came home on Denlinger's second double of the game.

• York added on in the sixth as Jack Barry singled to short and moved to third on a Jimmy Wiegers double to right. They both came around to score on an Alvernia error as the York lead grew to 5-2.

• Alvernia got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Lucas Floyd sacrifice fly.

AJ Vincenzi came into the game in relief of Mann and shut down the Golden Wolves over the final three innings to earn the save. He allowed two hits, struck out one and walked another for the save.

 

Spartan Leaders

Junior Josh Mann earned this second win of the year as he went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk as he improves to 2-0 … AJ Vincenzi had quite a day as he earned a win in game one and picked up the three-inning save in game two … Jack Barry put the cap on a great week as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored in game two … Jimmy Wiegers was 2-for-5 with a run scored while Austin Denlinger had two more doubles as he was 2-for-5 with an RBI … freshman Brett DeWees was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the victory.

 

Notes

York now holds an 13-5 lead in the all-time series as they took three of four on the weekend … senior Jack Barry hit .538 (7-for-13) for the weekend with one double, one homer and three RBI … junior Austin Denlinger was also hot this weekend as he hit .467 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored … Denlinger now leads the MAC Commonwealth in doubles with nine after two in game two … AJ Vincenzi and Tim Halasnik each earned a win and a save from the bullpen this weekend … the Spartan pitching staff struck out 37 and walked just six in 33 innings of work for the weekend … Alvernia outhit the Spartans 44-39 for the weekend as the Golden Wolves hit .324 for the series … York drew 17 walks on the weekend … Alvernia turned seven double plays in four games … after hitting five home runs on Friday, the Spartans did not dial deep on Saturday … York was held in single digits in runs for the sixth straight game after starting the season with five games in which they scored double digits … York struck out just seven time in Saturday's two games.

The Spartans return to action on Good Friday, April 2 as they will host Albright in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader to kick off the four-game series. First pitch from Jaquet Field on Friday is set for 12:00 pm.
