Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, VA – The York College baseball team saw their 2020 season get off to a rocky start as the Green and White were swept by Lynchburg on a chilly Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Spartans dropped the opener 4-3 and the Hornets completed the sweep with a big first inning in game two as they posted a 12-1 victory over York.

How It Happened
• The Spartans had a chance to get on the board in the first as Austin Denlinger singled on the season's first pitch. He was forced out at second on Jimmy Wiegers' fielder's choice. Wiegers stole second and moved to third on a throwing error with one out. Unfortunately for York, Wiegers would end the inning on third.
• The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning as Carrson Atkins walked with one out and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Garett Jackson.
• The Spartans answered back in the top of the second as Luke Turner and Davaughn Reid singled. Craig Wiley drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Denlinger came up big with a two-run double to left, scoring Turner and Reid to give York a 2-1 lead.
• A pair of walks and a Spartan error allowed the Hornets to tie the game in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a hit.
• The Hornets took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third as starting pitcher Kinston Carson had an RBI single and eventually came around to score on a Garrett Jackson run scoring double.
• York cut into the Hornet lead in the seventh as the Spartans scored on a strike out throw them out double play.
• The Spartans had a chance to tie the game in the ninth as they had runners at the corners with two outs but they wouldn't be able to push across the equalizer.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got on top early as Austin Denlinger singled to open the game. He moved to second on an error by the left fielder. Denlinger was then pushed to third by a Jimmy Wiegers sacrifice bunt. Joe Capobianco plated Denlinger with an RBI single to center.
• The lead was short-lived as the Hornets exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first to seize control of the game. They got their nine runs on six hits, with one error, three walks, and one hit batter.
• York had runners on base all day but wouldn't be able to get the big hit as they were held off the scoreboard for the final eight innings of the day.
• Lynchburg added three runs in the seventh to close out the scoring. The Spartans got a solid outing in long relief from Donovan Oakes as he threw a career-high six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The Spartans are now 3-6 in season opening games under head coach Mike Scappa who is in his ninth year at the helm of the program … York has lost five straight season openers … sophomore Austin Delinger had five hits in the two games with a double and two RBI … junior Luke Turner was 3-for-8 with a run scored on Saturday .. the Spartan pitching staff walked 11 in the two games … the Hornets stole five bases in the twinbill … York outhit Lynchburg 17-15 in the two games but the Hornets outscored York 16-4.
