How it Happened
• In a Capital Athletic Conference contest to determine seeding, York threw the first punch. In the top of the first inning, Grant Oberholtzer singled up the middle to lead off. Zach Hossler followed that with a single of his own, through the left side to bring up Seth Brosius. The senior right fielder kept the hit parade alive, singling to center field and loading the bases. With one out on the board, everyone advanced on a wild pitch, bringing Oberholtzer home for a 1-0 lead. Jack Barry walked to load the bases again, and then Garrett Southern reached on an error, making it 2-0 as Hossler scored. Collin Crowell and Patrick Clement each drove a run home before the inning ended, putting York ahead 4-0 after the first half inning.
• Kyle Burger launched a two-run shot over the center field fence to cut the Bobcat deficit in half at 4-2 in the bottom half of the first, but Bobby Kuehn settled down and got out of the inning without anymore damage.
• Both offenses were held scoreless in the second and third innings, but Frostburg St. struck again in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, a double put two runners in scoring position and then Evan Colon knocked them both home to level the score at 4-4.
• If you were waiting for a Spartan answer, you didn't have to wait long. In their next ups, in the top of the fifth, York blitzed the Bobcats for five runs to retake the lead at 9-4. Southern and Crowell reached first on a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, and they each advanced a base on a passed ball. To bring them both home, Clement doubled down the right field line to drive in both runs. The bases were loaded again after Devin Chapman and Oberholtzer reached base thanks to a hit by pitch and walk, setting up Hossler with a remarkable opportunity that he took advantage of. The senior whacked a double to left field, scoring Clement and Chapman, making it 8-4. Hossler scored the final run of the inning when he moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a balk.
• Each team notched three runs in the sixth, coming from two homers in the York half, a solo shot courtesy of Barry and a two-run bomb from Chapman pushed the Spartans lead to 12-4. Frostburg answered with three of its own in the bottom half, on a three-run shot from Burger, his second long ball of the afternoon.
• The Spartans lengthened their lead again in the top of the eighth, getting runs from Clement and Chapman. Clement scored when Chapman reached on an error and then Chapman eventually scored on a Brosius single. Those runs were mightily important, because in the bottom half, the Bobcats ripped off five runs on four hits and two York errors to close within 14-12. The Frostburg rally continued in the bottom of the ninth, ignited by Burger's third homer, a solo shot to lead off. Another home run tied the game and then the Bobcats walked off when Logan Corrigan singled down the left field line to win the game.
