Baseball Earns Saturday Split at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College baseball team earned a split of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Spartans won the opener 5-4 before the Eagles bounced back to win the nightcap, 9-4.

How It Happened

• Mary Washington jumped on top of the Spartans in the bottom of the second as Mark Smith hit a two run homer to left center, giving the Eagles the early lead. The Spartans answered in the top of the third as Jack Barry ripped a two-run double to right, scoring Grant Oberholtzer and Zach Hossler.

• Barry struck again in the fifth as he stroked a two-run single to left field, scoring Hossler and Christian Bilan.

• Mary Washington cut into the lead in the sixth with a Ramis Ruiz RBI single to center. York got that run right back in the top of the seventh as Barry capped his career day with his fifth RBI as he scored Bilan with a double to right center.

• The Eagles threatened in the ninth as they scored one and had the tying run at third and the winning run at first but Spartan starter Joel Kenney got a ground out to end the game. Kenney tossed his second straight complete game as he earned the win.

How It Happened

• The Eagles jumped on the Spartans early in game two. Mary Washington notched a run in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the second to take command of the game. The big blow in the second was a two-run double to left center from Stephen Johnston.

Grant Oberholtzer got the Spartans on the board with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. The Eagles answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame as they led 7-1.

• The Eagles extended their lead to 8-1 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. York made a final push with a three run top of the seventh. Seth Brosius drilled a two-run single to center and then Rob Acierno singled in Zach Hossler, cutting the UMW lead to 8-4.

• Mary Washington closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh, earning the conference split.

The Spartans are now 38-41 all-time against Mary Washington as the Spartans have won three of their last four meetings … senior Joel Kenney has tossed back-to-back complete game wins … in his last two games, Kenney has thrown 18 innings, allowed six runs, struck out 14 and walked five … Kenney is 3-0 with two complete games in CAC play … freshman Jack Barry tied his career-high with his five RBI in game one … Barry is now tied with Christian Bilan for the team lead in 41 RBI … York has four players with 40 or more RBI as Zach Hossler (40) and Seth Brosius (40) join Bilan and Barry among the top eight in the CAC in the category … the foursome is also ranked in the top ten in the CAC in RBIs in conference play.

 

Up Next:

The Spartans return to action on Monday, April 30 when they travel to Frostburg, Maryland to play the Bobcats in the CAC finale for both teams. First pitch is scheduled for 3:45 pm. The winner of the game will be the fourth seed in next weekend's CAC Tournament while the loser of the game will be the sixth seed. The Spartans and Bobcats will square off on Friday morning in Salisbury in the opening round of the CAC tournament at 9:00 am.
