Southern's Four Hits, Grega's Strong Outing Powers Spartans Past Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College baseball team got to play just their second game in the last eight days as the Spartans bounced the St. Mary's College Seahawks 14-4 in York's Capital Athletic Conference opener in St. Mary's City on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Garrett Southern banged out four hits while junior right-hander Will Grega tossed seven strong innings in the victory for York.

The weather has wreaked havoc on the Spartan schedule as York has lost six games over those eight days due to the snow storm that struck the Mid-Atlantic region last week.

How It Happened

• The Seahawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Joey Bryner singled to left with one out in the inning to start the uprising. Matt Ansaldi followed with a single to right and Bryner scampered to third to put Seahawks at the corners with one out. After Ansaldi got picked off at first for the second out, Sam James singled to right, scoring Bryner with the first run of the game. James was then picked off at first to end the inning.

• The Spartan offense was held in check until the top of the fifth. York got on the board when Garrett Southern, who singled to start the inning, scored on a wild pitch. Zach Hossler followed with an RBI single to make it 2-1 York. Seth Brosius made it 3-1 on an RBI single as Grant Oberholtzer came around to score. Christian Bilan plated the fourth run of the inning with an RBI ground out to score Hossler. Brosius came around to score on a Seahawk error as St. Mary's was charged with three miscues in the frame. The Spartans sent nine men to the plate in the inning.

• The Green and White struck for four more runs in the sixth on the benefit of just two base hits. The inning started with back-to-back walks. After an error allowed a run to score, Oberholtzer singled to score Bailey Doan as York's lead grew to 7-1. Bilan drove home the third run of the inning with an RBI single and Brosius eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as the Spartans were in control of the game.

• The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Southern, who led the inning off with his third hit of the day, came around to score on a wild pitch and Doan scored on an error as York led 11-1.

• St. Mary's got a single run off starter Will Grega in the bottom of the seventh as Ansaldi had a sacrifice fly to score Jay Hammett who doubled to lead off the inning.

• St. Mary's tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, cutting York's lead to 11-4.

• The Spartans closed out the day with a two run single and he eventually came around to score on a Bilan RBI single to close out the scoring.

The Spartans improve to 58-17 all-time against the Seahawks as they have won nine of the last ten games against St. Mary's … York is now 13-4 against St. Mary's under head coach Mike Scappa … junior catcher Garrett Southern had a career game as he was 4-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, and a stolen base … the four hits, the five total bases, and the four runs scored are all career highs for Southern … junior Will Grega had a solid outing with a season-high seven innings of work as he struck out five and did not walk a batter … the start was Grega's fourth of the season and first since March 14 … Grega did not issue a walk for the first time this year … senior Zach Hossler had his eight multi-hit game of the year as he was 3-for-6 … Hossler is 7-for-12 with three runs scored and six RBI in his last two games.

The Spartans are scheduled to return to action on Thursday afternoon as they travel to Randolph Macon to face the Yellow Jackets in a non-conference contest. First pitch from Ashland, Virginia is set for 3:30 pm.
