How It Happened

• The starting pitchers took turn throwing up zeroes through the opening four innings of play. However, both teams had chances as the starters had to dance around some trouble early.

• York loaded the bases in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of walks and a hit but Stevenson starter Michael Remeikis got out of the inning with a pop up.

• The Mustangs threatened in the second as they loaded the bases with three walks on the brutally cold day but Spartan starter Will Grega got himself out of the jam without any damage.

• Grega, who did not allow a hit through the first four innings, got nicked in the fifth. Senior Michael Rhodes got the first hit for the Mustangs as he blooped a single over the head of second baseman Zach Hossler to lead off the frame. After a fly out to center and a foul out to catcher Garrett Southern, Kevin Murray singled to left as he got jammed on an 0-2 pitch and flicked the ball the opposite way. The Mustangs finally cashed in as Matthew Kerber bounced a single back up the middle to score Rhodes with the game's first run. With the Mustangs having a first and third situation, Stevenson executed a double steal as Rhodes scored for the 2-0 lead. Kerber eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as the damage was done.

• While the Mustangs were finding gaps, the Spartan offense continued to hit the ball on the screws at the Mustang fielders. Stevenson also made a number of stellar defensive plays in support of Remeikis who had the Spartans' number all day long.

• The Spartans had seven hits but did not have more than one hit in any of the nine innings.

• Stevenson blew the game open in the sixth. Murray got hit by a pitch with one out and promptly stole second base. Kerber then laid down a bunt to put runners at the corners. Kerber stole the Mustangs fourth bag of the game as he moved up 90 feet. John D'Aquanno then singled to left, scoring Murray and Kerber, pushing the Stevenson lead to 5-0. Billy Small then laid down a bunt base hit that the Spartans threw away, allowing D'Aquanno to score for the 6-0 Stevenson advantage.

• The Spartans got a pair of runners on in the eighth but Remeikis got a fly out to end the threat. He sat the Spartans down in order in the ninth to earn the complete game shutout.
