Spartans Close out CAC Play with a Split

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College baseball squad concluded their 2016 Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader split at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Eagles bludgeoned the Spartans 21-9 in the opener but the Spartans rebounded with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. York is now 8-25-1 overall and 6-12 in the CAC while the Eagles are 24-14 overall and 7-11 in the league.

 

Game One How It Happened

• Mary Washington got the offense going early as they put a six spot on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Spartans have now allowed 14 runs in the first two innings of their last two games.

• Mary Washington made it 8-0 with a two spot in the third.

• The lead ballooned to 12-0 with the Eagles denting the plate four times in the fourth.

• York got on the board with a three spot in the top of the fifth. Patrick Clement, Brayden Lackey, and Collin Crowell had RBIs in the inning.

• Mary Washington made it 13-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

• York scored once in the sixth but the Eagles put the game out of reach with a seven spot.

• The Spartans got one in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to provide for their final line score.

Notes: York got nine runs on 14 hits with two errors while the Eagles scored 21 runs on 22 hits with four errors …. It is the second time this year the Spartans have allow more than 20 runs in a game … York has allowed double figures to their opponents in 17 games this season … the last time the Spartans allowed 20 or more runs in a CAC game came in the March 29, 2009 loss at Salisbury as the Sea Gulls downed the Spartans 30-6 … the loss eliminates the Spartans from the CAC Tournament for the second consecutive year … the Spartans won the CAC regular season championship in 2014 but have missed the tournament the last two years.

 

Game Two How It Happened

• The Spartans started the scoring with a pair of runs in the third. Zach Hossler had an RBI single followed by a Steve Miller RBI single to put York up 2-0.

• Mary Washington got a single run back in the bottom of the third thanks to a Spartan error.

• York scored three runs in the top of the fifth to push out to a 5-1 lead. Sean Mohollen had an RBI single while Seth Brosius had an RBI double in the uprising. Logan Countryman closed out the scoring with an RBI single to right.

• Mary Washington got single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings but Scott Steffy closed the door to pick up his third save of the year.

Notes: The Spartans got five runs on 11 hits with two errors while the Eagles had three runs on eighth hits with a pair of errors … the win snaps a school-record 11 game losing streak … Will Grega picked up his first collegiate win with the victory

What's Next: The Spartans are now off until Tuesday, April 26 when they travel to Montclair State University to face the Red Hawks in a non-conference contest. First pitch from Yoggi Berra Stadiums is set for 4:00 pm.
