Baseball Loses Slugfest with #8 Shenandoah

YORK, Pa.  – The Spartans gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning surrender a 15-14 victory to eighth-ranked Shenandoah University on Monday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Spartans got on the board in the first frame when Sean Mohollen drove in Collin Crowell on sacrifice fly to left. Crowell led off the inning with a single to center.
  • In the second inning, Seth Brosius led off with a single and later Clayton Hoff reached on a walk. Michael Moore cleared the bases as he smoked a shot over the left field wall for a three-run homer.
  • Zach Hossler led off the third by reaching on a error and then moved to third after Steve Miller stroked a line drive to the warning track in center. Hossler then scored on a wild pitch and Miller later scored on a failed pick-off attempt at first base.
  • The Hornets got on the board in the fourth Jake Loew drove in Tristan Baker on a sacrifice fly. Shenandoah left two runners stranded to end the inning.
  • Shenandoah tacked on two more in the fifth as Baker reached on a fielder's choice which moved in Luke Nussman from third. Then Abel Arocho singled to right field to drive in Zach Herbaugh from third.
  • York answered back in the bottom of the fifth as Andy Weaver roped a double down the left field line to drive in Brosius from second. The Spartans left two runners stranded in the inning.
  • With two away in the sixth and bases loaded, Baker stung a single up the middle to drive in Tyler Hott and Nussman. Next up, Arocho singled through the right side to drive in Joe Coleman from third. Then, Loew roped a double to right center to right center to drive in Bake and Arocho.
  • Crowell led off the sixth with a single up the middle, followed by Hossler who reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Later, Miller singled to score Crowell and then Brosius hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Hossler.
  • The Hornets started off the seventh by loading the bases with the first three batters and then a single up the middle Herbaugh drove in two of the runners. The Spartans managed to turn a double play to get the first two outs, but Nussman scored from third in the process.
  • The Spartans hung five runs on the board in the seventh to take a 14-11 lead. Miller highlighted the offensive effort with a two-run blast to left field.
  • The Hornets tacked on one run in the top of the eighth and left two runners stranded.
  • Then Shenandoah compiled three runs on three hits in the top of the ninth to take a 15-14 lead and held on in the bottom of the inning for the win.
