Salisbury Sweeps Spartans on Sunday

YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad dropped a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to #11 Salisbury on a breezy Sunday afternoon in York. The Sea Gulls won game one 10-4 and completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap. Salisbury improves to 19-8 overall and 11-4 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 7-22-1 overall and 5-10 in the league. York has now lost eight straight.

 

Game One How It Happened

• The Sea Gulls opened the scoring in the top of the second on a Jack Barry sacrifice fly, scoring Jake Dmiterchik with the game's opening run. The Spartans were able to get out of the inning without any more damage as Salisbury left a pair of runners stranded.

• Salisbury made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth as Pete Grasso scored on a fielder's choice. The Gulls got their second run on a wild pitch.

• Tom LaBriola made it 4-0 in the fifth as he hit a home run to deep right. The round tripper was his third of the year.

• Salisbury put the game away with a four-run sixth inning. The uprising was aided by a pair of Spartan errors and two walks. Jake Dmiterchik blasted a two-run homer to left to close out the scoring in the inning.

• Salisbury made it 10-0 on RBI singles from Kyle Goodwin and Alex Lipman in the seventh inning.

• York finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth as Logan Countryman and Patrick Clement had back-to-back doubles to lead off the eighth inning. Collin Crowell had a third double in the frame that scored Clement for York's second run.

• York got two more runs in the bottom of the ninth. Clement had an RBI single off the pitcher with the bases loaded to score one run. The second run came home on a Michael Moore RBI single to right. Salisbury got out of the jam with a game ending double play.

Notes: York got four runs on 10 hits with two errors while Salisbury got 10 runs on 13 hits with one error … Salisbury stranded 10 while York left six runners on base.

 

Game Two How It Happened

• The Sea Gulls opened the scoring in the third as Tom LaBriola laced a bases loaded single to center with two outs, scoring two runs to put the Gulls on the board. Jake Dmiterchik followed with a run scoring single to right. All three runs were unearned due to a Spartan error earlier in the inning.

• Salisbury tacked on to the lead in the fourth as Mike LaBriola laced a two-run single down the right field line to make it 5-0.

• York got a lead off double from Zach Hossler in the fourth but Salisbury got a strikeout, a foul out and another strikeout to leave Hossler at second.

• The Sea Gulls made it 6-0 on a Jack Barry sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and York escaped further damage as Salisbury left two runners stranded.

• York got themselves back in the game in the bottom of the sixth. York loaded the bases and then junior Logan Countryman unloaded them with a grand slam to left. The grand slam is Countryman's second of the season and promptly drew York to within two at 6-4.

• Salisbury built their lead back to four with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Brad Keith stroked a bases loaded single through the right side to plate the two runs.

• The Spartans scored a run on a Collin Crowell double to left center and eventually loaded the bases though Pete Grasso would come in and get a line out to center to earn the save for the Sea Gulls.

Notes: The Spartans got five runs on 10 hits with two errors while Salisbury had eight runs on eight hits with no errors … York is now 46-68-1 all-time against Salisbury as the Gulls have won five straight in the series … York is now 3-12 against Salisbury under head coach Mike Scappa …  York has now lost a school-record tying eight straight, tying the record set by the 2011 team from April 6 through April 25.

What's Next: The Spartans return to Jaquet Field on Monday afternoon as they host #8 Shenandoah in a non-conference contest. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
