Box Score YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad trailed 10-0 after the first two innings of play but the Spartans salvaged a 12-12 tie with #6 Randolph-Macon after an eight run bottom of the eighth inning allowed York to pull even on Thursday afternoon in York. The Yellow Jackets got a trio of runs in the top of the tenth but the game was called because of darkness and the game reverted to the last completed inning, allowing the tie.
The Yellow Jackets are now 16-3-1 overall while the Spartans are now 6-14-1 overall.
How It Happened:
• The sixth ranked Yellow Jackets jumped on York early in the top of the first. Rick Spiers singled up the middle to lead off the game. He stole second and moved to third on a beautifully placed bunt single from Christian Sanderson to put runners at the corners. Sanderson stole second and Travis Lodge followed with a single to plate Spiers with the game's first run. RMC catcher Nick Maiolo launched a moon shot home run deep over the left field wall to put the Yellow Jackets up 4-0. Randolph-Macon finished the inning with four runs on five hits.
• Randolph-Macon continued their offensive assault in the top of the second. They loaded the bases and got their first run of the frame on a bases loaded walk. The Spartans made a pitching change as freshman Bobby Kuehn entered the game with no outs and the bases loaded. Maiolo greeted the freshman lefty with a sharp single to left field making it 6-0 Yellow Jackets. Another hit, a Spartan error, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly made it 10-0 at the end of the second inning of play.
• York broke up the shutout in the bottom of the third. Luke Knott and Clayton Hoff opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Zach Hossler got York on the board with a long single down the left field line to score Knott. RMC would get a double play and a ground out to end the inning and limiting York to one run.
• The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 11-1 in the fourth with an RBI single from shortstop Jeffrey Butler.
• The Spartans got a single run back in the fourth as Steve Miller walked, moved to second on a ground out and to third on a Patrick Clement single before scoring on a Nic Phelps wild pitch.
• York tallied two more runs in the sixth as Clement had an RBI double while Hoff also had a run scoring single.
• Travis Lodge made the score 12-4 as he launched a solo homer deep to left to lead off the eighth inning.
• York got that run back in the bottom of the eighth and then some. York plated eight runs in the bottom of the frame on four base hits, a pair of hit batters and five walks as York sent 14 hitters to the plate as they stunned the sixth ranked Yellow Jackets.
• Both teams would get the lead off runners on in their respective ninth innings. In each instance, the runner was sacrificed to second and also in each instance, they were stranded at second to end the inning.
• The Yellow Jackets struck for a pair of runs in the top of the tenth inning. Travis Lodge drew a lead off walk. Pinch runner Matthew Blaise moved to second on a single from Nick Maiolo. Cole Migliorini singled home the go ahead run. RMC would get two more runs to pad their lead.
• That lead would get wiped out as darkness halted the game with one out in the bottom of the tenth, sending to score back to 12-12.
