Spartans Split Saturday Twin Bill with #15 CNU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YORK, PA – The York College baseball team used a dramatic eighth inning rally in game one to garner a split against #15 Christopher Newport on Saturday in York. The Spartans won game one 11-10 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth to steal the win. The Captains salvaged the split with an 8-4 win in the nightcap. York is now 6-12 overall and 4-2 in the league while the Captains are 14-5 overall and are also 4-2 in the conference.

Game One How It Happened

• The Captains opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the second inning as Connor Henderson singled, was sacrificed to second and eventually scored on a Jordan Mason sacrifice fly to left.

• York tied the game in the bottom of the second as Luke Knott singled with two outs. He moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a Brayden Lackey infield hit. Collin Crowell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Hossler then plated Knott with an infield single, tying the game at one. The Spartans would leave the bases loaded.

• CNU got that run back in the third as Tommy Vitaletti singled and moved to third on a Brandon Ginch single. Vitaletti scored on a Keith Roberts' sacrifice fly.

• The game would remain 2-1 until the top of the sixth inning as the Captains smacked the Spartans with a four run inning. The Captain uprising was aided by a pair of big Spartan errors. Jordan Mason singled to center with the bases loaded and the ball was misplayed in the outfield allowing all three runners to score. York would get out of the frame as reliever Chris Wolf got Vitaletti to line into a double play to end the inning.

• York got a four spot of their own in the bottom of the sixth and much like the top of the inning, the uprising was aided by a defensive error. The Spartans scored the four runs on three hits including a huge two-run single to left by Patrick Clement as York trimmed its deficit to 6-5.

• The Captains tallied a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 8-5.

• Senior Sean Mohollen cut the Captains' lead to 8-6 as he blasted a solo home run off the top of the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh for York.

• CNU extended the lead to 10-6 with two more runs in the top of the eighth as they looked like they had the game sewed up.

• York started the comeback in the bottom of the eighth as Clement walked and Knott singled to center. A bunt moved them each up 90 feet and they came around to score on Crowell's two run single down the right field line. Hossler then reached base and moved to second on a throwing error as the tying run was now at second base. Crowell scored on a Seth Brosius RBI ground out and Hossler would score on Mohollen's ringing double to left center, tying the game at 10. Steve Miller put York in front with a double of his own, plating Mohollen with the eventual game winning run.

• The Captains opened the ninth with a Brandon Walker single but freshman Will Grega got the next three hitters in order to preserve the win. It was the first time in the game that CNU got a lead off runner on base but failed to score. They had scored in the previous five innings in which they got a lead off batter on base.
