Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The Rutgers-Camden baseball squad used a five run first inning to ignite a 12-5 non-conference victory over the York College Spartans in the Green and White's 2015 finale.
The Scarlet Raptors improve to 27-17 as they are squarely in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament bid. The Spartans conclude the campaign with a disappointing mark of 14-23.
Camden wasted little time in jumping on the Spartans as they plated five runs on five hits and two walks, seizing control of the contest early. The Spartans got a single run back in the top of the second as Angelo Hronis (Shippensburg, Pa./Chambersburg) plated Christian Bilan (Lumberton, N.J./Camden Catholic) with a sacrifice fly, cutting the York deficit to 5-1.
Camden got right back to work in the bottom of the second as they tacked on three more runs to take an 8-1 lead. The Green and White got single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings, cutting the Scarlet Raptor lead to 8-3 but the home team tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach. York got their final two runs of the year in the top of the seventh as Sean Mohollen (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) had an RBI double and Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) contributed an RBI single for York.
Billy Jackson earned the win for the Raptors as he tossed six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He improves to 6-1 with the win. The three pitchers out of the Camden pen pitched well as they allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over the final three innings of the game.
Senior Andrew Tucci (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) absorbed the loss for York as he allowed eight runs on eight hits in his one-plus inning of work. He walked two and did not record a strikeout as he finishes the season 5-2. Matt Goodman (Owing Mills, Md./Franklin) relieved Tucci and allowed four runs on seven hits with one punch out in his 4.2 innings of action. Patrick Pittman (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings as he allowed a hit with a pair of walks. Senior Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) made his final appearance in a Spartan uniform a good one as he tossed a scoreless eighth inning for York.
Joe Brooks powered the Raptors as he was 5-for-5 with three runs scored. Bobby Romano went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored while Joe Sigismondi added three hits and a run scored.
Senior Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) closed out his stellar York career with three hits in four at-bats. Wenzel finished his career with a .380 batting average with 124 hits in his 326 at-bats. Miele and fellow senior Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) each contributed a pair of hits for York. Mohollen finished the day with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Hronis drove in a pair with two sacrifice flies in the game.
The loss closes out the careers of Wenzel, Pitzer, Miele, Tucci, Philippi, J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley), and Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown). The senior class combined to win 86 games during their four-year stay in York.
