Mustangs Down Spartans on Sunday

Box Score

STEVENSON, MD – A perfect day for baseball was all that went in the York College baseball team's favor as they fell 8-2 to the Stevenson University Mustangs at Park Field on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Mustangs closed out their regular season with a 19-17-2 record while the Spartans fall to 13-18 following the loss.

Mustang pitcher Mike Remeikis came out firing as he retired the Spartan side in order the first three innings of the game.

Craig Joseph led off the bottom of the second with a single down the left field line. After Joseph advanced to second on a wild pitch, Nick Peifer singled through the left side, advancing Joseph to third. The Mustangs took the 1-0 lead due to a passed ball, scoring Joseph from third.

After Ian Eberly singled to right field and Matt Alcantara was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom of the third, Joseph hit an RBI single through the left side to expand the Mustangs lead to two. Peifer then stroked a two-run double to center field, scoring Joseph and Alcantara. The Mustangs increased their lead to five as Kevin Kopas hit an RBI single to right field.

The Spartan offense got something going in the top of the fifth as Derek Pitzer (York, Pa. / Dallastown) drew a leadoff walk. After Remeikis got two straight outs, Pitzer stole second and scored as Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown East) roped an RBI double down the right field line.

Spartan pitcher Andrew Tucci (Birdsboro, Pa. / Daniel Boone) got in more trouble in the bottom of the sixth as he walked Alcantara to lead off the inning. Troy Miller then singled to left field. Alcantara advanced to third and Miller advanced to second on a Spartan fielding error. The Mustangs took the 7-1 lead as Joseph singled through the left side, scoring Miller and Alcantara.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ben Demchak (Phoenix, Md. / Hereford) came in to relieve Tucci. After two walks and a single, Demchak was in a jam with bases loaded and one out. The Mustangs expanded their lead to seven as Alcantara reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Casper from third.

The Spartans added a run in the eighth to cut the lead to six but that would be all as the Mustangs shut them down in the ninth, to end their regular season with an 8-2 victory.

Mustang freshman pitcher Remeikis kept the Spartans off balance as he earned his second victory of the season with one run allowed on two hits in six strong innings of work. He struck out one in the win. Danny Doyle gave up one run on two hits in two innings of relief. Darrin Hawkins closed it out as he allowed one hit in his one inning of action.
