YORK, PA – The York College baseball team used a strong
pitching performance and some timely hitting to secure a 10-1
victory over Franklin & Marshall College on Friday afternoon in
York. The Spartans, winners of three straight, improve to 21-12
overall while the Diplomats fall to 12-19-1 for the season.
The Diplomats got to Spartan starter Chris
Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) in the top
of the first after the right-hander struck out of the first two
batters of the game. Matt Will began the uprising with a single to
up the middle. Bill Murray then laced a single past a diving
Matt
Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) in left center to plate
Will who was running on the play.
The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the first
off Diplomat starter Bobby Hayes as he hit a batter and walked two
others but the Green and White couldn't get on the board as they
left the bases loaded.
The Green and White got on the board in the third started by
Dustin
Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) as the designated
hitter was plunked for the second time in the game. Back-to-back
infield singles by Kyle Cook (Pylesville,
Md./North Harford) and Rick Shumway
(Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) loaded the bases for
Mike
Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield). The senior
outfielder plated Worthman with an RBI fielder's choice.
C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) walked
to reload the bases with one out. After Hayes got a pop up,
Rob
Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) smoked
triple to the right center gap, scoring all three runners, giving
York a 4-1 lead.
The Spartans tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth as
Jim
Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central)
singled, moved to third on a hit and run single from Worthman and
scored on a Cook sacrifice fly. After a Shumway single put runners
at first and second, Connolly singled to right, scoring Worthman
and moving Shumway to third. Collin McCune came into the game in
relief of Hayes and got the final two Spartans to keep the damage
at two.
York tacked on a pair of runs in both the fifth and eighth
innings to provide for the final 10-1 margin.
Frankenfield earned the win as he improves to 5-1. He allowed
one run on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in his seven
innings of work. Brandon Ullom (South
Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) worked a perfect eighth
inning and Jeff Benchich (Salt
Point, N.Y./Millbrook) was smooth in the ninth to cap a
very good day on the mound for the Green and White.
Hayes took the loss as he allowed six runs on seven hits with
three walks and three strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of action.
Hayes falls to 0-2 with the loss. McCune allowed two runs, one
earned, on three hits in 2.2 innings on the hill. Zeke Fine allowed
two the last two runs on three hits and a walk as he pitched the
eighth for the Dips.
Worthman had a perfect day at the plate as he was 3-for-3 with
two runs scored and an RBI. He was also hit by pitch in his first
two plate appearances as the lead off man was on base all five
times. Connolly was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Klinck had two triples as he now has a team-leading seven
three-baggers while he also drove in three and scored another run.
Meehan and Shumway were the other two Spartans with two hits in the
14 hit Spartan attack.
Murray led the Diplomats with two hits and an RBI and was the
only F&M hitter with multiple hits as Diplomats had just five
singles for the day.
The Spartans return to action Saturday afternoon when they host
Christopher Newport in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is
slated for a noon start. The first game will be preceded by the
Spartans' 2010 senior day as the Green and White will recognize
their seven seniors. The ceremony will begin at approximately 11:50
am.
