SALISBURY, MD – The second-seeded York College Spartans
saw their 2010 Capital Athletic Conference tournament run come to
an end with a tough 5-4, 12-inning loss to the Wesley Wolverines on
Saturday afternoon in Salisbury.
The Spartans fall to 18-12 overall while the Wolverines improve
to 18-11. Wesley now advances to Sunday's championship round where
the need to win a pair to capture the championship.
The Wolverines got off to a great start with a three run bottom
of the first inning off Spartan starter Chris
Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon). The
uprising with aided by a Spartan error as York found themselves
behind the eight ball in the critical elimination game. Kevin
Murphy had an RBI single up the middle while Tyler Burns had a two
run single to provide for the three runs in the frame.
York trimmed the Wesley lead by one in the third as Dustin
Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) singled, stole
second, moved to third on a Kyle Cook (Pylesville,
Md./North Harford) single through the right side. Worthman
scored on a Rick Shumway
(Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) RBI single to
left.
York cut the lead to one in the seventh courtesy of a Cook RBI
single to left center that scored Matt Monti (Easton,
Md./Easton). Unfortunately for York, the Wolverines got
that run right back in the bottom of the frame on a Bryan Reshetar
sacrifice fly.
The Spartans forced extra innings in the top of the ninth as
Cook doubled to start the inning. Wesley pitcher Kyle McGuire got
the next two hitters out as the Spartans were down to their last
out in the tournament before C.T. Stanley (Timonium,
Md./Calvert Hall) singled to put runners at first and
third. Steve Tretter
(Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) singled to scored Cook as Stanley
moved to second. Rob Klinck (Stanhope,
N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) then scored Stanley with a
single to right center as the Spartans tied the game at four.
After three scoreless at-bats by each team, the Wolverines won
the game in the bottom of the 12th. The inning started
with Greg McKee reaching on a Spartan throwing error. McKee moved
to second on a wild pitch and then scored when Seth Hastings
doubled down the left field line to score McKee with the
game-winner.
Ryan Doran was the last of five Wesley pitchers as he earned the
win. He threw 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, scattering just two
hits, walking two. Doran improves to 3-1 with the win. DJ Keckler
started and threw seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven
hits with six punch outs and one walk.
Brian
Lusby (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) earned the
loss as he allowed one unearned run courtesy of the Spartan error
in the bottom of the 12th inning. He falls to 0-1 with
the loss. Frankenfield started but was lifted after the first
inning. Freshman Joey Couch (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) then came in and was brilliant in
relief. Couch allowed one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and
four walks in 7.1 innings of work. He was a large reason the game
even made it to extra innings.
Grant Morlock led the Wolverines as he was 3-for-5 with a run
scored. Murphy and Hastings were the other two Wesley hitters with
multiple hits as they both had a pair of knocks while they also
drove in a run. Byrnes had a pair of RBI on his first inning
hit.
Cook led the Spartan offense as the junior tied a school record
with six hits in seven at bats. He scored one and drove in another
for York. Klinck was the only other player to have multiple hits as
the duo combined for eight of the Spartans' 14 hits.
The Spartans return to action with a doubleheader at home
against Immaculata on Tuesday, April 20. First pitch for game one
is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
