ASHLAND, VA – The York College baseball team concluded their
2010 spring trip in less than spring-like conditions as they fell
to Randolph-Macon 9-3 in a non-conference contest from Ashland, VA
on Tuesday. The game was played in a steady, cold rain that
eventually turned into wet snow by the end of the contest.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-2 overall
while the Green and White falls to 2-3 with the loss.
Randolph-Macon got on the board in the bottom
of the first when Jeb Weymouth singled, advanced to third on
another single and scored on a Greg Mitro RBI fielder's
choice.
The Spartans wasted little time in tying the
game in the top of the second as senior Mike Connolly
(Selden, N.Y./Newfield) scored on an RBI ground out from
Devin Harbold (York, Pa./West York). The Spartans
left the bases loaded as RMC starter Michael Helbig minimized the
damage in allowing just the one run.
It took the Yellow just one batter into the
bottom of the second to recapture the lead as James Bierlein jacked
a solo homer to left, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
After two and a half quiet innings of play,
Randolph-Macon strung together five hits to plate four runs off
Spartan starter KC Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red
Land) in the bottom of the fifth. That outburst upped the
Yellow Jacket lead to 6-2.
York finally got something going offensively
in the seventh as Rick Shumway (Shippensburg,
Pa./Shippensburg Area) singled with one out in the frame.
He moved to third when Matt Monti (Easton,
Pa./Easton) doubled to right center. Shumway scored on a
Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford)
sacrifice fly, cutting the York deficit to 6-2. Monti came around
to score when CT Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall
College) doubled down the left field line. Stanley was
left on second as the Spartans couldn't plate the junior as
they trailed 6-3.
The Yellow Jackets took away any Spartan
momentum in the bottom of the inning as they got those two runs
right back, putting York back into a five run hole. Randolph-Macon
closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth as York
couldn't get anything cooking in the final two innings of
play.
Helbig earned the win, his first victory of
the year. He allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout and a
walk in his five-inning stint. The Yellow Jacket bullpen allowed
two runs on five hits over the final four innings of the game.
Beshore threw the first five innings and
allowed six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts as he falls to
0-1 in his first start of the year. Joey Couch (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) was the most effective of the
Spartan relievers as he threw a perfect sixth inning, striking out
two in his one inning stint.
Five Yellow Jackets had two hits led by Kevin
Davis who was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Weymouth was
2-for-5 with two runs scored while Jordan Walton was 2-for-4 with a
pair of RBI. Brian Jordan finished with two hits, two runs scored
and an RBI while Adam Carpenter had two knocks and a run scored.
Seven Spartans had a hit in the game with as
Monti and Stanley each had a double for York's two extra base
hits in the game. Stanley, Cook and Harbold had the Spartan RBI in
the contest.
The Spartans are slated to return to action on
Friday against Mary Washington at Jaquet Field but the current snow
cover on the Spartans' home field makes that contest
unlikely. The Green and White is scheduled to travel to Mary
Washington on Saturday for a Capital Athletic Conference double dip
starting at 1:00 pm. Please check with ycpspartans.com for the most
