ABERDEEN, MD – The York College baseball team continued
their challenging week as they traveled to Aberdeen, MD to take on
Stevenson University on Friday afternoon at the Ripken Baseball
Academy. The Spartans, playing their fifth game in four days,
dropped a 7-4 decision to the host Mustangs as York falls to 2-4 in
the Capital Athletic Conference, and 5-8 overall. The Mustangs
continue their school-record breaking start as they improve to 11-2
overall and 5-2 in the CAC.
The Mustangs took the lead in the bottom of the first courtesy
of a George Papuchis RBI single to left as Stevenson led 1-0 after
one inning.
The Spartans took a short-lived lead in the top of the third as
C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College)
stroked a two-out, two-run single to center to score Kyle
Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) and Rick
Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area).
The Mustangs quickly tied the game in the bottom of the third as
Justin Anderson and Papuchis ripped back-to-back doubles, tying the
game at two.
The Mustangs blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth with
a trio of runs. Spartan starter Chris Frankenfield (Blue
Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) hurt himself with a pair of walks
in the frame as both free passes came around to score. Brandon
Krochune had a two run double in the inning while Jeff Bihy added
an RBI double to left with two outs in the inning.
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 6-2 with a single run in the
bottom of the sixth before the Spartans scored a run of their own
in the top of the seventh. Shumway doubled home Dustin
Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) for the Spartans'
seventh inning tally.
Stevenson answered York's seventh inning run with a run of
their own in the bottom of the frame.
York got a single run in the eighth on a Jim Meehan
(Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) RBI ground out
but York left runners at first and third and they would not score
again.
Derrick Nason earned the win as he improves to 2-1. He allowed
three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in his
6.1 innings of work. Johnny Jackson threw 1.1 innings, allowing a
run on three hits with two walks. Patrick Quinn picked up the save
with 1.1 innings of one-hit relief.
Frankenfield was tagged with the loss as he allowed five runs on
six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings. He
falls to 1-1 with the loss. Three of Frankenfield's four
walks came around to score.
Papuchis and Krochune each went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run
scored. Dustin Tarlow added a hit, two runs scored and an RBI while
Chris Maienshein went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Stanley led the Spartans as he was 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional)
went 2-for-4 while Shumway had a double, an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans conclude their seven-games in five-days stretch on
Saturday when they host the Mustangs in a CAC doubleheader. Game
one at Jaquet Field is set for 1:00 pm.
