FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College
baseball squad picked up a critical Capital Athletic Conference
road win on Wednesday as they defeated the University of Mary
Washington 6-4. The Spartans, who are holding onto second place in
the CAC, improve to 21-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference. York
sits two games back of Salisbury with two to play while they are a
game up on third place Stevenson. Mary Washington falls to 13-11
with the loss and 7-9 in the conference.
The Eagles reached Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) for a pair of runs in the bottom
of the first. The Eagles had the uprising despite Rosenzweig
recording two outs with the first two batters for UMW. Back to back
singles followed by a two-run double from Bryan Quintana gave the
hosts the early advantage.
Eagle starter Andrew Cox cruised through the first four innings
as he allowed just three base runners over those first four frames.
The tide turned in the fifth as Cox hit C.T. Stanley
(Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) with a pitch. Stanley
was thrown out attempting to steal second but Cox walked
Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J/Lenape Valley Regional)
and Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton). A passed ball
moved Klinck and Monti to second and third with one out.
Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) worked Cox
for a walk to load the bases. Freshman Dustin Worthman
(Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) remained red hot as he lashed a
two-run double down the left field line to score Klinck and Monti,
tying the game at two. Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) singled to score Doyle. Worthman and Cook then
pulled off a double steal with Worthman scoring and Cook moving to
second. After Cook moved to third on a balk, Mike Connolly
(Selden, N.Y./Newfield) singled him home for the 5-2
Spartan lead.
The Eagles trimmed their deficit to 5-3 with a single run in the
sixth but York got that run back in the top of the eighth. Mary
Washington got an unearned run in the ninth but junior
Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) got the
final two outs for his first save of the season.
Rosenzweig continues to be York's most reliable starter as
he tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits with two
strikeouts and a walk. He improves to a staff-best 6-1 with the
win. Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell,
Pa./Wissahickon) pitched a perfect eighth inning before
Christenberry gave up an unearned run on a hit with a strikeout and
no walks.
Cox absorbed the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits with
four walks in his 4.1 innings of work. The Eagles got a solid
relief outing from Zach Hendrix as he allowed an unearned run on
four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings of
action.
Worthman and Cook were fantastic at the top of the lineup for
York as they combined to record seven hits. Worthman was 4-for-5
with two RBI and a run scored while Cook was 3-for-4 with an RBI
and a run scored. Connolly went 1-for-4 with an RBI while
Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) was 1-for-4
with a run scored.
Second baseman Eric Rehbein led the Eagles as he was 3-for-5
with a run scored. Santino Rosanova added three hits and a run
scored of his own while Will Wright was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Quintana was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
The Spartans and Eagles renew acquaintances on Saturday as they
close out the CAC regular season with a doubleheader at Jaquet
Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
