GLEN BURNIE, MD - The York College Spartans
finally faced off against Stevenson University in their Capital
Athletic Conference doubleheader on a crisp and cool Tuesday
evening in Glen Burnie, MD. The doubleheader, originally scheduled
for March 28, got postponed three times before finally being played
on Tuesday. The Spartans won game one 11-9 before the Mustangs
rebounded to earn the split with a 9-3 win in the nightcap. The
nightcap win allows the Mustangs to take the season series, two
games to one, and with that, the CAC tiebreaker. The Spartans are
now 20-7 overall and 10-5 in the CAC. The Mustangs are 14-15
overall and also 10-5 in the CAC.
In game one, sophomore Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) got the spot start as postponed games have hit
the Spartan pitching staff hard. York gave Cook a great cushion as
they scored six runs in the top of the first. CT Stanley
(Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) had a two run double
in the frame for the Spartans.
York added a single run in the second, increasing the lead to
7-0. The Mustangs trimmed their deficit to five with a two-run
bottom of the second. After a pair quiet innings in the third and
fourth frames, the Spartans banged out four hits and scored four
runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-2.
Stevenson made it interesting as they tallied four runs in the
bottom of the fifth, two more in the sixth and a single run in the
seventh to provide for the Spartans' final two-run margin of
victory.
Cook earned the win as he allowed six runs on 13 hits in five
innings of work. He struck out four and walked one as he improves
to 3-3 for the year. Senior Jake Hughes (Schwenksville,
Pa./Souderton) picked up the save as he allowed an
unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. It is his first save of
the year.
Senior Wade Keenan took the loss for the Mustangs as he allowed
seven runs on 10 hits in just two innings of work. He falls to 3-3
with the setback.
The Spartan offense was led by freshman Rob Andrews
(East Northport, N.Y./Commack) as he was 4-for-4 with two
RBI and a run scored. Freshman Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle,
N.J./Seneca) added three hits and two runs scored as he
played second in place of Cook while the sophomore was on the
mound. Stanley drove in four runs with two hits and a run scored
while Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) was 2-for-4
with two RBI and a run scored.
Max Eckert was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored to lead
the Mustangs. Justin Anderson and George Papuchis each had three
hits while Griffin Stewart and Kyle Van Beek also had three knocks
each. The Mustangs banged out 19 hits in the loss.
In game two, the Spartans got off to a good start with three
runs in the top of the second. The rally could have been better but
the Spartans left the bases loaded.
The Mustangs answered with four runs in the bottom of the second
as they took a lead they would not relinquish. Stevenson tacked on
three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game
out of reach.
Jake Sodeman earned the win for the Mustangs. He tossed 4.2
innings, allowing three unearned runs on six hits with two walks
and a strikeout. He improves to 1-0 with the victory. Brian
Spinazzola tossed the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits
as he struck out two and walked one in his stint.
Freshman KC Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red
Land) was tagged with the loss as he allowed seven runs in
four innings. He surrendered 12 hits with two strikeouts and one
walk. He falls to 4-1 with the loss.
Anderson led the Mustangs as he was 3-for-4 with two runs scored
while Stewart was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Dustin
Tarlow was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Eckert added a
hit, three RBI and a run scored.
Worthman led the Spartans with three hits and an RBI as he was
the only Spartan with multiple hits in the game. Catcher
Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor
Central) was 1-for-3 with the Spartans' other RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they
travel to Fredericksburg, VA to face the University of Mary
Washington Eagles in the start of their final Captial Athletic
Conference series of the year. Game time in Fredericksburg is set
for 3:30 pm.
