CENTER VALLEY, PA – The York College baseball team snapped
their three-game losing skid in emphatic fashion as the Spartan
offense exploded for a 15-6 non-conference victory at DeSales
University on Monday afternoon in Center Valley, PA.
The Spartans improve to 27-12 overall with the win while the
Bulldogs fall to 20-16-1 for 2009.
The game featured a big milestone for Spartan senior
Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) as the
centerfielder became York's all-time leader in hits with his
first inning single to right field. That hit was career knock 252
for Poff as he passed former Spartan All-American Matt Day for
first on the list. Poff, who last week broke the school record for
total bases, is closing in on another school record as he is just
three doubles away from tying Day's mark of 66 career
two-baggers.
Poff's first inning single was a part of a two-run frame
as the Spartans took the early lead. The Bulldogs answered
York's two-run top of the first with a two-spot in the bottom
of the first.
The offensive tone continued in the third as York got an RBI
single from Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield)
followed by a two-run blast from CT Stanley (Timonium,
Md./Calvert Hall College) putting the Spartans up 5-2. The
Bulldogs cut into the lead with a single run as the game stood at
5-3 through three innings.
The middle three innings were quiet as the Spartans maintained
the lead. The visitors blew the game open in the top of the seventh
with a five run inning. The frame featured just one Spartan hit,
two DeSales errors, four wild pitches, four walks and two DeSales
pitching changes.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 12-3 with two more runs in the
eighth before the Bulldogs got three runs back in the bottom of the
eighth. York answered the Bulldogs three-spot with a three run
rally of their own in the top of the ninth to close out the
scoring.
Poff finished the game with four hits, two RBI and two runs
scored in his record-breaking day. Freshman Dustin Worthman
(Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) continues his torrid hitting as
he banged out three hits, scored four runs and had an RBI as his
average has climbed to .487. Stanley went 2-for-4 with three RBI
and two runs scored. Connolly and Matt Monti (Easton,
Pa./Easton) each added two hits, a run scored, and an RBI
to the 16-hit Spartan attack.
Carson Slonaker led the Bulldogs as he was 3-for-5 with two RBI
and a run scored. Derek Moyer was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run
scored. Nick Repas added three hits for the Bulldogs.
Senior Jake Hughes (Schwenksville,
Pa./Souderton) earned the win in the spot start for the
Spartans. The left-hander tossed seven innings, allowing three runs
on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He improves to
1-0 for the campaign.
Matt Angelillis suffered the loss for DeSales as he allowed five
runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. The Bulldogs used five
pitchers in the game as they each surrendered at least one run in
their outing.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they
travel to Montclair State. The game was originally scheduled to be
played on Tuesday in York but the game was rescheduled due to a
conflict with Montclair's conference tournament schedule. The
game will be played at Yogi Berra Stadium with first pitch coming
at 3:30 pm.
