NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College
Spartan baseball team suffered a pair of tough regional losses as
the Christopher Newport Captains swept the Spartans on Sunday
afternoon in Newport News, VA. The Captains took game one 9-7 and
then completed the sweep with a 12-1 thumping in game two.
The Captains improve to 24-10-1 overall while the Spartans now
stand at 26-12.
In game one, the Captains jumped on Spartan starter
Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) for two
runs in the first and two runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
York got two runs back in the top of the fourth as CT
Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) jacked a
two-run homer, his team-leading seventh of the campaign. That began
a furious two inning stretch as the Captains answered the Spartans
two spot in the bottom of the fourth.
York got two more in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to
6-4 but the Captains extended their lead to 9-4 with a single run
in the fifth and a two-spot in the sixth.
The Spartans got three runs in the top of the seventh but it was
too-little-too-late for York.
Christenberry absorbed the loss as he went 5.1 innings, allowing
nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one
walk. Christenberry falls to 7-2 with the loss.
Ian Lenda earned the win for the Captains as he allowed two runs
on three hits with three strikeouts. He improves to 5-2 with the
win.
Four Captains had multiple hits led by Trae Bailey as he was
2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Eric Cole was 2-for-4 with
two runs scored while Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 with two runs
scored and an RBI. Shannon Mack was the final Captain with multiple
hits as he was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The Spartan offense was paced by Dustin Worthman
(Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) as the freshman was 3-for-4 with
two runs scored. Mike Connolly (Selden,
N.Y./Newfield) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored
as he banged out his third home run of the year. Stanley was
1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The second game got away from the Spartans early as the Captains
led 9-0 through three innings. They added three runs in the fifth
to take the 12-0 lead. York broke up the shutout with a run in the
top of the seventh.
Brandon Berry nearly tossed the shutout as he allowed a run on
six hits with two strikeouts in seven innings. He improves to 5-1
for the Captains.
Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon)
suffered the loss as he had his first bad outing of the year.
Frankenfield allowed nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits with a walk
and a strikeout. The loss is Frankenfield's first of the year
as he falls to 3-1.
Bailey led the Captains as he was 3-for-4 with five RBI and
three runs scored. Chris Despins added three hits and two RBI while
Michael Romett was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. David
Fennessey and Parker Neal were the other two Captains to record
multiple hits as they each had two.
Freshman Rob Andrews (East Northport,
N.Y./Commack) was the only Spartan to notch multiple hits
as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Ryan Poff (York,
Pa./Spring Grove) had a double for the Spartans. That hit
was significant as he ties former Spartan great Matt Day for the
school record in career hits with 251. The double also gives him 21
for the season which ties him with Day for second on the all-time
single season list.
The Spartans will look to get back on track on Monday as they
head to DeSales to take on the Bulldogs in a non-conference
contest. First pitch from Center Valley, Pa is slated for 3:30 pm.
