YORK, PA – The York College baseball team
suffered a hard-to-swallow 16-11 loss to Stevenson University in
the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on
Friday in York. The Spartans committed eight errors in the game,
which led to nine unearned runs on the day.
The Spartans fall to 24-8 overall while the Mustangs stand at
16-18 for the year. The Spartans now have a long road to the
championship as they must defeat top seeded Salisbury in
Saturday's first game. The Sea Gulls were 4-2 losers to
Wesley College in another second round game on Friday.
Max Eckert gave the Mustangs the early lead as he jacked a
three-run homer to left center in the top of the first. Stevenson
scored single runs in the second and third innings followed by a
three-run fourth inning as they led 8-0 through three and a half
innings of action.
York cut the lead to 8-4 with a four run outburst in the fourth.
The Spartans recorded a trio of run-scoring doubles in the frame as
they appeared to have gotten themselves back into the game.
However, the Spartans gave it right back as the Mustangs tallied
two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 11-4
lead. York got a Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape
Regional) solo homer to lead off the sixth, cutting the
lead to 11-5.
Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the eighth with matching
four runs innings. The difference was that Stevenson got their four
runs on two hits and three Spartan errors while York got theirs on
four hits and one Mustang miscue.
Stevenson got a single run in the top of the ninth to make it
16-9 before the Spartans tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of
the frame to close out the contest.
Derrick Nason earned the win as he hurled 128 pitches in the
victory. He improves to 5-4 as he allowed nine runs, five earned,
on 12 hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in his 7.2
innings of work.
Sophomore Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) started and took the loss as he falls
to 6-2. Rosenzweig allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with
one walk in his three-inning stint. Five Spartans would follow him
to the mound and combine to give up 11 runs on eight hits with five
strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Just four of the 11 runs
that the bullpen surrendered were earned.
Eckert led the Mustangs as he was 4-for-6 with five RBI and
three runs scored. Justin Anderson added four hits, three runs
scored, and two RBI. George Papuchis was the third Mustang with
multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Junior Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) led the
Spartan offense as he was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two
RBI. Sophomore Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red
Lion) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while
Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) and Ryan Poff
(York, Pa./Spring Grove) each added two hits. Klink ended
the game 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
York will attempt to extend their stay in the tournament at 9:00
am Saturday morning against the host Sea Gulls. The loser of that
game will be eliminated from the tournament meaning either the one
or two seed will be the second team of the tournament that will be
sent packing. Sixth seeded Mary Washington was the first team
eliminated this year as they fell to #5 St. Mary's in extra
innings on Friday.
