YORK, PA – The York College baseball team picked up two more Capital Athletic Conference victories Saturday with 4-1 and 11-7 triumphs over Mary Washington. The Spartans improve to 23-7 (13-5 CAC) while the Eagles fall to 14-13 (9-9 CAC).
    Game one saw the Spartans fall behind early as Shane Sixsmith led off the contest with a double. Sixsmith then scooted over to third as Seamus Bergen pushed him over courtesy of a fielder's choice and a York error. After Bergen stole second, the Eagles looked for a big inning with runners on second and third and nobody out.
    Spartan starter Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) enticed Eric Rehbein to fly out forcing both runners to stay put.  Will Wright then knocked in Sixsmith via sacrifice fly to center for the game's opening tally, but the Spartans did record the inning's second out. Christenberry then escaped the frame by striking out Bryan Quintana to end the inning and only allowing minimal damage.
    The Spartans captured the lead in the bottom of the third with a trio of runs. With one out, Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) knocked a single before being moved to third courtesy of a Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) double. Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) followed Cook's two-bagger with one of his own, plating York's first two runs. Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) recorded a single, moving Connolly to third with only one out. Rob Andrews (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) then coaxed a walk from Eagle starter Wes Hayden to load the bases. The Spartans' final tally of the frame came from a C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) sacrifice fly as York led 3-1 after three.
    Christenberry shut down the Mary Washington offense throughout the remainder of the contest. The Spartan junior only allowed one hit while striking out four the rest of the way.
    The Green and White tacked on an insurance run in the fourth as Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) led off the Spartans' half of the fourth with a double. After a fly out, Worthman notched a single. With a pair of athletes on the base paths, the Spartans executed a double steal which resulted in York's fourth run as the subsequent throw to third sailed into left field.
    With his gem of an outing, Christenberry improved to 5-1 on the year as he only allowed two hits and one run while striking out six. Hayden takes the loss for Mary Washington as he falls to 1-5 as he surrendered four runs on nine hits while also striking out six.
    In stark contrast to the opener, game two proved a slugfest that saw the squads combine for 18 runs.
    The Spartans struck first as they touched up Eagle starter John Miscioscia for two in the first. Worthman led off the Spartans' half with a single before swiping second. Cook then walked as the pair once again executed a double steal to set up runners on second and third with nobody out. Connolly grounded into a fielder's choice as the Eagles cut down Worthman heading home. Poff then drove in both Cook and Connolly with a double, his first of four in the game, to give York the early 2-0 advantage.
    The visitors evened the game in the their next at-bat using a two-out rally and several Spartan miscues to plate a pair.
    York secured the lead again in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a bases loaded walk as the Spartans led 3-2 after two.
    The floodgates would bust open in the third as Mary Washington and York combined for seven runs in the frame. The Eagles notched four scores in their half by playing little more than small-ball. Mary Washington linked a single, a Spartan error, and a walk together to load the bases before Alex Howell singled to bring in a pair. Two more would come home in the frame as Mary Washington took a 6-3 lead.
    York hung a three on their side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame as the Green and White deadlocked the score at six. Poff ripped another double before being brought home by an Andrews' single. A pair of walks later and the Spartans had the bases juiced with two outs. Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) knocked a single to plate Andrews and Stanley as the Spartans chased Miscioscia after only 2 and 2/3 innings.
    York added three more in the fourth and Mary Washington one in the fifth to bring the score to 9-7 in favor of the home squad. The Eagles threatened in that fifth inning but Spartan reliever Rob Harrington (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) recorded a pop out and strike out to close the inning, leaving a pair of Eagle runners stranded.
    The Spartans chipped in two more insurance tallies in the sixth, begun by another Poff double. Andrews' knocked in Poff with a single to push the lead to 10-7 York. Following a Stanley single and a Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) sacrifice bunt, Monti plated Andrews with a sacrifice fly for York's eleventh run of the contest.
    Despite a threat from the Eagles in the top of the seventh, Cook came on in relief and quickly registered the final three outs to record his fifth save of the year.
    Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) notched the win for the Spartans to move to 3-0 for the season. The Spartan junior went 4.0 innings allowing nine hits. The Spartan bullpen did its job not allowing a run over the final three innings.
    Miscioscia is saddled with the loss as he falls to 3-1 after going 2.2 innings and surrendering six runs on six hits. York got to the Eagles for 13 hits throughout the game.
    Worthman posted a banner day as he went 5-for-7 against Eagle pitching, scored two runs and drove in another. Poff put together a 5-for-7 day, including a monstrous 4-for-4 effort in game two in which he scored three times and had three R.B.I.s. Connolly went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with two knocked-in and one scored. Andrews had a fine game two going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
    Most of Mary Washington's damage came in the second game. Bryan Quintana went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Eric Rehbein posted a 2-for-4 effort with one scored. Howell, who was 1-for-2, plated two runs and scored another. Jeff Zeisler had a pair of runs batted in.
