YORK, PA – The York College baseball team
got back on the winning track with a 4-0 non-conference victory
over Lebanon Valley College on a sun splashed Tuesday afternoon in
York. The Spartans improve to 17-5 overall as they snap a three
game losing skid. The Flying Dutchmen fall to 12-12-1 overall with
the loss.
The story for the Spartans was the performance of the four
pitchers they sent to the hill. The Spartans, pitching by committee
due to a heavy schedule of games for the week, received their third
shutout effort of the year from the foursome. Starter KC
Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) began the game and
looked like he was going to get in trouble right away. He walked
the lead off hitter before coaxing Aaron Mills to hit into a double
play. Beshore then walked a second batter and gave up a double to
put runners at second and third. He got Derek Helwig to pop up to
end the threat. Beshore settled down and allowed just two hits over
the final two innings of his appearance as he kept the guest off
the board.
The Spartan offense gave Beshore the early lead in the bottom of
the first as Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) singled with one out. He advanced to second on a
wild pitch and scored when Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) laced a double to right center on a 3-2 pitch. The
two-bagger was Poff's team-leading 13th of the year.
York pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth as Matt Monti
(Easton, Pa./Easton) doubled to right field with one out.
Monti came around to score when Joe Doyle (Stewartstown,
Pa./Red Lion) stroked a single to center. Doyle moved to
second as the relay throw got away, setting up York's second
run of the inning. Doyle moved to third on a wild pitch from LVC
starter Brian Miller. He scored when Jim Meehan (Mastic,
N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) lifted a sacrifice fly
to deep right.
York tacked on their final run in the fifth as Cook led off with
bunt single. He moved to second when Miller threw away the ball
attempting to get Cook at first. The Spartan sophomore moved to
third on a fly ball and scored when Poff hit a ground ball to
short. Cook beat the throw to the plate, giving York a 4-0 lead.
The three pitchers following Beshore to mound were Chris
Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), Jake
Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) and Jeff
Benchich (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook). Frankenfield was
the most impressive pitcher for the Spartans on the day as he
tossed two perfect innings. He struck out one and continued to be
the Spartans most reliable reliever in the pen. Hughes tossed two
innings, allowing two hits with a walk and a strikeout while
Benchich finished the game, tossing the final two innings, as he
allowed a hit while he also posted a strikeout.
Beshore earned the win as he allowed three hits with two walks
and four strikeouts in three innings. He improves to 4-0 with the
victory.
Miller suffered the loss for the Flying Dutchmen as he allowed
four runs, two earned, on nine this with two walks and a strikeout.
Miller falls to 1-2 with the loss. Pete Moro tossed the final
inning for LVC and was perfect.
Cook notched a career day as he was 4-for-4 with two runs
scored. He raised his batting average 37 points with the perfect
afternoon. Monti was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Doyle was
2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Poff was 1-for-4 with two
RBI.
Six different Flying Dutchmen had hits in the game with Joe
Soupik and Dustin Adams picking up doubles for LVC.
The Spartans continue their busy slate of games for the week as
they travel to Wesley College to face the Wolverines in a key
Capital Athletic Conference contest in Dover, Del. First pitch is
set for 3:30 pm.
