YORK, PA – The York College baseball team received seven
strong innings from sophomore starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) as they posted their 14th
straight win, a 6-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St.
Mary's College on Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans
improve to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in the CAC while the Seahawks fall
to 10-8 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Rosenzweig gave the Spartans a very good outing as he held the
Seahawks in check all day long. The right-hander allowed two runs,
one earned, on four hits in seven innings of work. He struck out
five and walked another as he improves to 4-1 with the win.
After three scoreless innings, the Seahawks opened the scoring
with a one-out triple from Matt Baden in the top of the fourth.
Baden came around to score on an RBI ground out from J.P. Debrowski
as the guests took a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted just two batters into the bottom of the fourth
as Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) singled
through the right side to open the inning. He came around to score
three pitches later when Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) stroked his team-leading 10th double of the year, a
shot to right center, plating Connolly with the tying run. After
Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock)
singled to move Poff to third, the senior centerfielder scored when
CT Stanley (Timonimum, Md./Calvert Hall College)
grounded into a double play.
The Seahawks tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to
some bad Spartan defense as St. Mary's scored a run on one
hit and two Spartan errors. The damage could have been worse but
Rosenzweig worked his way out of trouble to keep the game tied at
two.
His offense would reward him in the bottom of the fifth as
Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) ripped a
two-out RBI double to score pinch runner Chris Young
(Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) with York's third run.
Cook then came around to score on a Connolly RBI single to right
center field as the Spartan lead grew to 4-2.
York closed out the scoring in the sixth as Austin walked to
start the inning. Stanley then jacked his second home run in as
many games, launching a Jon Gill offering to deep left as the
Spartan lead was 6-2.
The Spartans turned to Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell,
Pa./Wissahickon) in the eighth and the junior responded by
keeping the Seahawks off the board, preserving the Spartans'
four run lead. Frankenfield allowed two hits with a walk in
his two-inning stint.
Stanley led the Spartans as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a
run scored. Connolly added two hits, an RBI and a run scored while
Poff was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Debrowski and Mark Dattilio each had two hits to pace the
Seahawks. Debrowski added an RBI while Dattilio scored one of St.
Mary's two runs.
Gill took the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits with two
strikeouts and a pair of walks. He falls to 2-5 with the setback.
Mike Victory relieved Gill and was sharp as he threw 2.2 perfect
innings for the Seahawks.
The Spartans and Seahawks continue their three-game set tomorrow
as they play a twin bill in St. Mary's City, MD. First pitch
in game one is set for 1:00 pm.
