YORK, PA – The York College baseball team
captured their 13th consecutive win with an 11-6 win over
Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans
improve to 13-2 overall while the Bullets fall to 6-8 for the
campaign.
The game was a tale of two contests. The first seven innings saw
the Spartan pitching staff dominate the Gettysburg hitters as they
held them to just one hit over the opening seven frames. The eighth
inning was dramatically different as the Bullets exploded for six
runs in turning a non-competitive contest into a nail biter for the
Green and White.
The Spartans took control of the contest early as Mike
Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) stroked an RBI double to
left, scoring Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley
Regional) with the game's first run three batters
into the bottom of the first.
York pushed the lead to 4-0 with a trio of runs in the third
inning. Klinck had an RBI ground out followed by a Ryan
Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) RBI single to third base.
Sophomore CT Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall
College) then notched another infield hit for the Spartans
to score Connolly, providing the Spartans with the four run bulge.
Three of the four Spartan hits in the inning were of the infield
variety.
While the Spartan offense was doing its job, the York pitching
staff was holding the Bullet bats silent. Freshman KC
Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) was the first of
seven Spartan pitchers to throw in the game. Beshore was brilliant
in his two-inning stint as the right-hander faced just six batters,
striking out two as he picked up his second career victory. Since
the Spartan coaching staff predetermined an order of more than
three pitchers in the game, NCAA rules state that Beshore earns the
win despite only throwing two frames. Andy Rosenzweig (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) followed Beshore to the mound and
was perfect in his one inning of work. Senior Jake Hughes
(Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) tossed the fourth inning as
he faced one over the minimum with a walk and a strikeout.
Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon)
hurled the next two innings and allowed one infield hit in the
fifth as Gettysburg had just two base runners through the first
seven innings.
The Spartan offense went back to work in the fifth as Stanley
struck a big blow in the frame with a mammoth three run homer to
deep left field. After Stanley's team-leading fourth tater of
the year, Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) tripled
to deep center and scored on a wild pitch as the Spartan lead grew
to 8-0.
York tacked on a single run in the seventh when Stanley singled
with two outs and came home on a Monti single to left center.
The Spartans looked like they were on their way to a shutout win
but the Bullet bats woke up in the eighth as they plated six runs
on six hits with a Spartan error. The outburst turned a nine run
Spartan bulge into a much too interesting three run lead.
The Green and White got two of those runs back in the bottom of
the eighth to provide for the final 11-6 margin of victory.
Stanley led the Spartan offense as he was 2-for-3 with four RBI
and two runs scored. Connolly added two hits with two runs scored
and an RBI. Klinck also had a pair of knocks with an RBI and a run
scored. Senior Matt Austin (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Susquehannock) also had two hits and a run scored
while Monti was the fifth Spartan with multiple hits as he was
2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Scott Vladyka was 1-for-4 with two RBI to pace Gettysburg. Chris
Simard, Cam Riera, Drew Roy, and Cory Beddick each had a hit, an
RBI and a run scored for the Bullets.
Will Kleva suffered the loss for the Bullets as he allowed eight
runs on 10 hits with two walks in 4.2 innings of work. He falls to
1-3 with the loss. Bobby Martz relieved Kleva and surrendered a run
on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of
action. Mike Odierna was the final Bullet pitcher for the day as he
allowed York's final two runs in the eighth inning. He struck
out two and walked two others in his one inning of action.
The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon as they host
St. Mary's College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.
First pitch at Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
