YORK, PA – The York College baseball team extended their
win streak to 11 games with a 7-4 victory over #1 Salisbury
University in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday
afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in
the CAC while the top-ranked Sea Gulls drop to 14-2 overall and 5-2
in the CAC.
The Gulls got on the board first as Mike Celenza lifted a
two-out fly ball to right. Second baseman Kyle Cook
(Pylesville, Md./North Harford) raced out and right
fielder Mark Miloski (Calverton, N.Y./Riverhead)
charged in. Cook dove in an attempt to snag the ball and it looked
like he had it until the two collided allowing the ball to fall and
Celenza to reach second. After a walk, Cody Collins banged a single
through the left side, giving the guest an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans responded in impressive fashion in the bottom of
the first. After a strikeout to open the inning, York got
back-to-back singles followed by a ringing double to left center by
senior Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) scoring
two and giving York a 2-1 lead. After a walk to designated hitter
Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock),
sophomore C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall
College) stroked a double to right center, extending the
York lead to 3-1. Junior Matt Monti (Easton,
Pa./Easton) then grounded out to second, plating Austin
with the Spartans' fourth run.
Sophomore Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley
Regional) led off the bottom of the second with a single
and he came around to score three pitches later when Cook doubled
to left center, increasing the York lead to 5-1.
The Gulls cut into the Spartan lead in the fourth as Andrew
Miller recorded an RBI ground out, trimming the York lead to 5-2.
The Gulls left runners in the corner as Spartan starter
Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) got
himself out of the jam with a big strikeout of Celenza.
Salisbury finally knocked Rosenzweig from the game in the fifth
as they plated a pair of runs on a Chad Wolfe two-run single to
left, cutting the York lead to 5-4.
York got one of those two runs back in the fifth as Austin and
Stanley stroked back-to-back doubles to center, extending the lead
to 6-4 through five innings.
The Gulls looked like their were poised to strike for more runs
in the sixth as Randy Boyle walked and Celenza singled through the
right side to put Gulls at first and second with no one out.
Reliever Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell,
Pa./Wissahickon) came on and got a fly out to center.
Junior Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) then
made a fantastic diving catch on the warning track to rob Collins
of extra bases. Frankenfield then got Jordan Crystal to line out to
end the Sea Gull threat.
Monti got a sacrifice fly in the seventh to allow the Spartans
to take a 7-4 lead. The Green and White looked like they were going
to extend the lead to eight but Stanley was thrown out at the plate
to end the inning.
Cook came on in relief in the eighth. He allowed an eighth
inning single but was otherwise perfect as he closed out the game
in the eighth inning.
Rosenzweig earned the win as he tossed four-plus innings,
allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks and
a pair of strikeouts. He improves to 3-1 for the year. The
Spartans' bullpen was solid in getting to Cook. Jeff
Benchich (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) tossed an inning,
allowing a hit and two walks while Frankenfield also threw an
inning. Frankenfield allowed one hit while freshman KC
Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) tossed a very good
seventh as he allowed just one hit in his stint. Cook notched his
third save with one hit and one strikeout in his two innings of
work.
Dustin Herbert suffered the loss as he lasted just 0.1 innings
as he allowed four runs on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Herbert falls to 3-1 with the loss. Kyle Judson allowed two runs on
five hits in 3.2 innings of action in relief of Herbert. Bill
Morton followed Judson and surrendered a run on two hits in 2.2
innings of work. Kyle Starr was the final Salisbury pitcher to the
mound and he was the best of the bunch as he allowed just one hit
with one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.
Cook and Stanley paced the Spartan offense with three hits each.
Stanley added two RBI while Cook scored once and drove in another
for the Spartans. Poff was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs
scored. Monti went 0-for-3 but drove in two runs in the game.
Celenza paced the Sea Gull offense as he was 3-for-5 with a run
scored. Smith added two hits and a run scored while Brian Green was
the third Sea Gull with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4.
Collins was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Sea Gulls finished the game with 13 stranded runners while
York left seven on base.
The Spartans and Sea Gulls square off in a double header on
Saturday afternoon in a pair of seven inning games in Salisbury,
Md. Game one is set for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
