MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College
baseball squad opened their four-game stay in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
with a 20-8 victory over former Capital Athletic Conference rival
Catholic University on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon. The
Spartans, winners of three straight, improve to 3-2 overall while
the Cardinals fall to 2-3.
The Spartans jumped on the Cardinals early with two runs in the
top of the first. The Cardinals tallied three runs in the bottom of
the inning but York retook the lead for good with a four spot in
the top of the second. Catholic cut the Spartan lead to 6-4 in the
bottom of the second but York scored one in the third and six in
the fourth to put the game away. York scored two more in the sixth,
three in the seventh and two in the eighth as they rolled to their
biggest offensive output of the season.
Sophomore Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley
Regional) led the Spartans as he was 4-for-7 with two RBI
and two runs scored. Junior Matt Monti (Easton,
Pa./Eastern) added three hits, four runs scored, and two
RBI. Junior catcher Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South
Manor Central) chipped in with two hits, including a
triple, four RBI, and one run scored. Sophomore Kyle Cook
(Pylesville, Md./North Harford) and Ryan Poff
(York, Pa./Spring Grove) each banged out two hits. Cook
had two runs scored and an RBI while Poff contributed two RBI and
two runs scored. York had 13 players get at least one hit in the
game.
Catholic was led by Mike Goodman as he was 3-for-5 with three RBI
and two runs scored. Good hit two homers in the game for the
Cardinals. Tommy Little chipped in with two hits and an RBI as he
was the only other Cardinal with multiple hits. Patrick Quintana
contributed a hit and two RBI.
Junior Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown)
picked up his first win of the year as he allowed five runs, but
just one earned, on nine hits in six innings. Christenberry had
good control in his second outing of the year as he struck out
seven and walked only one. Kevin Sweeney took the loss for the
Cardinals as he allowed six runs on seven hits with a strikeout in
1.1 innings of work. Sweeney falls to 0-1 with the loss.
The Spartans return to action on Monday afternoon as they face off
against Eastern University in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is set for
12:00 pm.
