YORK, PA - The York College women's
lacrosse team grabbed a convincing 20-9 victory over visiting
Misericordia University Thursday evening as a cold wind swept
across Kinsley Field for much of the contest. The Spartans (8-4)
establish a new program record with eight wins on the season while
the Cougars (4-4) are held to under ten goals for the first time
all year.
Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area
Christian) was a force for the Spartan side as she was all
over the field. The senior midfielder set a career-high with ten
points as she tallied five goals and tied a career-high with five
assists. Napolitano also won five draw controls and picked up one
ground ball.
Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock)
and Kaitlin Davis (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) each
posted strong performances on the offensive end. Each player
scored four times and scooped up two ground balls. Davis was also
2-for-2 in free-position goals.
Misericordia jumped out front early as Jamie Wargo scored for
the Cougars just 49 seconds after the opening draw. VanLuit
answered Wargo's score just 15 seconds later to even the
tallies at one apiece. The Spartans would go on to score three more
times before Misericordia would get their second with 25:02 left in
the half. With the home squad leading 4-2, the green and white
would kick the offense into high gear.
Rachel Papsan (Baltimore, Md./North County)
started a five-goal run at the 22:31 mark on a Napolitano assist.
Napolitano would then cap the spurt five minutes later with her
fourth goal of the game with 17:13 showing on the first half clock.
Misericordia's Shannon Tinkham then cut the Spartan lead
to 9-3 with 13:07 to play before three more Spartan scores pushed
the advantage up to 12-3. One more Cougar goal and a pair of
Spartan scores brought the halftime margin to 14-4 in favor of the
green and white.
The second frame began much like the first as the Cougars scored
merely ten seconds into the half. York would then go on a six-goal
tear between the 29:11 and 16:15 marks. Megan Bell's
(Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) fourteenth goal of
the season started the spurt while Carla Thomas (Ellicott
City, Md./Howard) scored York's final goal of the
contest with 16:15 remaining on the clock. The green and white now
owned a 20-5 advantage and cruised over the game's final 16
minutes to capture the 20-9 victory.
For the game, the Spartans commanded a 44-21 lead in shots and
were 16-of-16 in their clear attempts. York also collected 24
ground balls to Misericordia's eleven, while also winning
18-of-31 draw controls.
Papsan added to the Spartans offensive production by recording a
hat trick while senior Kristy Powers' (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) freshman Molly Kerrigan (Bel Air,
Md./Institute of Notre Dame) each chipped in with a goal.
Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) picks
up her eighth win of the season recording four saves. Feustle has
been in net for each of the third-year program's 21 wins.
Allison Hoffer takes the loss for the Cougars making three saves
while Heather Heun made nine stops.
The Spartans return to action this Saturday as they host
Farmingdale State at 10:00 am. Prior to the game each of the
Spartan seniors will be honored for their contributions to the
women's lacrosse program.
