YORK, PA-The York College baseball team traveled two miles to
the north to play the Wesley College Wolverines at Sovereign Bank
Stadium on Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference
contest. The Spartans found the stadium much to their liking as
they downed the Wolverines 6-1 in league action on a sunny, yet
chilly, early April afternoon. The Spartans end a two-game slide
and improve to 6-18 overall and 5-8 in the CAC. The Wolverines fall
to 22-8 overall and 9-6 in the CAC.
The two starters were strong in the early third of the game.
Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock)
allowed just two singles in the first three innings while Wesley
starter Bryan Jennings surrendered three hits in the first three
frames as the offenses didn't look comfortable at the start
of the contest.
The Wolverines got on the board first in the fourth as Dan
Bunnion doubled with two outs. He came around to score when Grant
Morlock singled, giving the guests the early lead.
The Spartans answered Wesley's run in the top of the
fourth with a single tally of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) led off the inning with a
towering fly ball to left. Leftfielder James Overstreet misplayed
the ball for an error, allowing Poff to get to second. Poff
advanced to third on a wild pitch before Dennis Maxim
(Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) walked to
put Spartans at the corners. The Spartans then hit into their 29th
double play of the year but Poff rode home, tying the game at one.
The green and white took a 2-1 lead the next inning as Kyle Cook
(Pylesville, Md./North Harford) singled to lead off the frame. Cook
was sacrificed to second and then advanced to third on a ground out
to second. Cook came around to score when Jennings uncorked a wild
pitch allowing the Spartan freshman to race home.
York struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Mike
Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) drew a lead off walk. Poff
followed with a booming double to left center, scoring Connolly
with the Spartans third run. Poff then scored when Mike Santoro
(Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) hit a sharp single to center, pushing
the York lead to 4-1.
The Spartans closed out the scoring with two more runs in the
seventh. Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central)
walked to open the inning. After a lineout to center, Ryan Craig
(Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) doubled to right center, advancing
Meehan to third. Connolly had another good at-bat with a sacrifice
fly to score Meehan. Craig then came around when Poff doubled with
two outs.
Rosenzweig was outstanding all day long as the freshman went the
distance, allowing one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and
three walks. He improves to 2-3 but most importantly, gave the
Spartans a huge shot of adrenaline with his effort on the hill.
Jennings absorbed the loss as he allowed four runs, three
earned, on five hits with two walks and and one strikeout in 5.1
innings of work. He falls to 3-2 with the setback.
Offensively, Poff led the Spartans as he was 2-for-4 with two
RBI and two runs scored. Craig was 2-for-4 with a run scored
while Santoro added a hit and an RBI.
Bunnion led the Wolverines as he was 2-for-4 with a run
scored while Morlock was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as they travel to
Dover, Del. to face the Wolverines in a doubleheader. First pitch
is set for 3:00 pm.
