YORK, PA-The York College baseball team dropped a pair of
Capital Athletic Conference contests to #8 Salisbury
University on Sunday afternoon in York. The Sea Gulls edged the
Spartans 3-2 in the opener and then exploded for a 12-1 win in the
nightcap. Salisbury extended their win streak to 24 games as they
are now 24-1 overall and 11-0 in the CAC. The Spartans have lost
nine of their last ten as they stand at 5-18 overall and 4-8 in the
CAC.
In game one, the green and white got on the board first as
senior Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan)
knocked in Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) with
a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. The score
remained 1-0 until the Sea Gulls got to Spartan starter
Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) in the
top of the fourth. Randy Boyle singled to third to begin the
inning. Christenberry induced Mike Celenza into a ground ball
back to Christenberry for the start of a taylor made double play.
Unfortunately for York, Christenberry threw the ball high allowing
both runners to be safe. Christenberry loaded the bases as he hit
Justin Armiger with a 1-2 pitch. Christenberry got another ground
ball and the Spartans turned a double play but Boyle scored to tie
the game at one. Christenberry reloaded the bases with a pair of
walks and Tyler Riley lifted a fly ball to right. Spartan
rightfielder Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St.
Anthony's) was tracking the ball but when he went to
catch it, the ball popped out of his glove, allowing the Gulls to
plate two more runs. It appeared that the umpire initially ruled
Riley out but then changed the call, allowing Salisbury to score.
The Spartans cut the Sea Gull lead to one run in the sixth
as Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky
Point) scored on a double play ground ball after leading
off the inning with a double to left. Poff walked and Maxim singled
to put runners at first and second with two outs. Santoro then hit
a long fly ball to center that Sea Gull centerfielder Jordan
Crystal tracked down with a diving catch for the final out of the
inning. If the ball would have eluded Crystal, both Poff and Maxim
would have scored for the green and white.
York got two hits in the bottom of the seventh but they would be
unable to push across the game-tying run.
Eric Willey earned the win as he tossed seven innings, allowing
two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and one
walk. He improves to 5-0 with the win. Christenberry had one of his
best starts of the year as he allowed three unearned runs on three
hits. He struck out four and walked three as he falls to 0-5 for
2008.
Boyle, Celenza, and Andrew Miller had the hits for the Sea Gulls
while they each scored a run in the game.
Anzalone and Maxim each had two hits for the Spartans. Anzalone
added a run scored while Poff was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The nightcap was a totally different story for the green and
white as the Sea Gulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first
inning. The Sea Gulls added one run in the fourth before exploding
for four runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh as they
cruised to the win.
The Sea Gull offense was paced by Matt O'Keefe as he
was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Brian Camper was
2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Boyle was 2-for-6
with two RBI and a run scored. Miller chipped in with two hits and
three runs scored for the Salisbury offense.
Santoro paced York as he was 2-for-3 while freshman Rob
Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) was 1-for-3
with one run scored.
Ryan Bennick earned the win as he tossed six shutout innings as
he improves to 7-0 for Salisbury. He struck out four, walked two
and scattered six hits during his stint.
Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) took
the loss for the Spartans as he allowed seven runs, five earned, on
nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. The four Spartan
pitchers in the game combined to walk seven hitters as their
ability to throw strikes continues to hurt the green and white.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, April 2 as they host
Wesley College at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. Sovereign Bank
Stadium is the home of the Atlantic League's York Revolution.
First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
