YORK, PA-The York College baseball squad saw their losing streak
reach five games as the DeSales University University
Bulldogs posted a 14-11 win in a non-conference contest at Jaquet
Field on Tuesday. The Bulldogs improve to 9-8 with the win while
the Spartans fall to 4-14 overall.
The Bulldogs got on the board first as they struck for three
runs in the first. All three runs came after Spartan starter
Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) got a
pair of outs to start the game. DeSales first baseman Scott
Matejicka began the scoring with a long homer to left. Andrew Feher
was hit by a pitch and came around to score when Evan Zechman
ripped a two-run shot to left as the visitors led 3-0 before the
Spartans' got their first cuts.
The green and white trimmed the DeSales' lead to 3-2 when
Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) had an
RBI ground out and Jim Meehan (Mastic,
N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) stroked an
RBI single in the bottom of the second. York took a 5-3 lead
an inning later as Steve Pokopec (York,
Pa./Northeastern) ripped a three-run shot to deep left,
giving the Spartans a lead that would last until the top of the
fourth inning. That's when the Bulldogs tied the game with
combination of a check swing RBI double from Matt Connor that
landed on the right field line and a Spartan error that allowed a
run to score.
Each team scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning as
the teams headed to the seventh tied at seven. After a scoreless
seventh, the eighth inning was a wild frame that featured a
combined nine runs.
In the Bulldogs' top of the eighth, Spartan reliever
Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion)
got the first two out of the innings courtesy of a line out and a
strikeout. That's when the roof caved in. Back-to-back
doubles put the Bulldogs up one run before Michael Roberts
(Oceanside, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) relieved Gunder.
Roberts walked the first batter he faced to put runners at first
and second. Zechman then singled through the left side to increase
the lead to 9-7. Doc Neiman then plunged the dagger into the
Spartans with a three-run homer that increased the led to 12-7.
Much to the Spartans' credit, they responded in the bottom
of the inning. Freshman Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape
Valley Regional) led off the frame with his first
collegiate home run, a moon shot to deep left. After Cook reached
on a DeSales error, Meehan and Mike Connolly (Selden,
N.Y./Newfield) had back-to-back singles to load the bases.
After a strikeout, Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point,
N.Y./Rocky Point) ripped a single up the middle to plate
two, cutting the Spartan deficit to 12-10. Mike Santoro
(Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) followed that with a single up
the middle to score Connolly as York drew to within a run. That
would be as close as the green and white would get.
DeSales got a pair of key insurance runs in the ninth as Ryan
Blacker had a two-out, two-run single.
Mark Reilly earned the win in relief for the Bulldogs. He tossed
two innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits with a
pair of strikeouts in two innings of work. He improves to 2-1 with
the victory. Joe Walsh picked up his second save of the year as he
allowed no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Gunder absorbed the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits
in 2.2 innings of action. He struck out two and walked one as he
falls to 0-2.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Matejicka as he was
3-for-4 with three RBI and an RBI. He had a two doubles and a home
run on the day. Zechman and Neiman each had two hits, three RBI and
a pair of runs scored while Heard was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Spartan offense was led by Klinck as the freshman was
3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Pokopec was 1-for-3 with
three RBI and two runs scored while Santoro was 2-for-5 with two
RBI and two runs scored. Senior Dennis Maxim (Port
Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added two
hits and a pair of runs scored. Meehan had a pair of hits, two RBI
and a run scored.
The green and white look to snap their losing streak on
Wednesday as they travel to St. Mary's College to face the
Seahawks in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. First
