SALISBURY, MD-The York College baseball squad
picked up a big Capital Athletic Conference road victory as they
traveled to Salisbury University and left with a 3-1 conference win
on Easter Sunday. The Spartans, winners of three straight and 19 of
their last 21 games, improve to 20-5 overall and 6-1 in the
conference. Salisbury, the eighth ranked team in the nation falls
to 22-5 and 5-3 in the CAC.
The two starting pitchers, Spartan senior Chris
Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) and Salisbury's Bryan
Brainer, matched each other zero for zero over the first four
innings of the game. The green and white finally broke the
scoreless tie in the fifth. The uprising started with a Dennis
Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) one-out
double. Senior Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) reached on
catcher's interference and then both runners advanced a base
thanks to a passed ball. On the initial passed ball, Maxim was able
to score when Salisbury catcher Tyler Riley's throw to third
got away for an error. Young then scored on consecutive wild
pitches, giving the green and white the 2-0 lead.
York tacked on another run in the top of the
seventh as Young singled, advanced to second on another Riley
error, and then scored on a throwing error from reliever Adam
Keeling.
The Sea Gulls finally got to Brower in the
bottom of the eighth for one run on a Andrew Jensen sacrifice
fly.
Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock), the
Spartan starter who shutdown Salisbury on Wednesday, relieved
Brower in the ninth and picked up his second save of the year,
returning the favor to Brower who had picked up a save in
Wednesday's game.
Brower improves to 4-1 with the victory as he
allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks
in eight innings. Frisch allowed one walk in the ninth but that
free pass came with two outs and did not hurt him.
Brainer suffered the loss as he falls to 6-2.
He allowed two runs, both unearned, on five hits with seven
strikeouts and one walk in five innings of work. Keeling allowed
one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of
action.
Offensively, Young was 3-for-3 with two runs
scored as he continues to be outstanding for York. Maxim was the
only other Spartan with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with a run
scored. Maxim's double in the fifth was the game's lone
extra base hit.
Salisbury was handcuffed on three hits with
Randy Boyle, Alex Vitale, and Riley each had singles for the
Gulls.
The Spartans continue their four-game road trip
on Tuesday as they travel to Messiah College to face the Falcons.
Game time in Grantham, PA is set for 3:30 pm.
