ST. MARY'S CITY, MD-The York College baseball team did not enjoy their first game as a ranked team in five years as the green and white were stunned by St. Mary's College, 5-4, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon in a windy St. Mary's City, MD. The Spartans, who entered the NABC poll at #23 on Tuesday, fell to 20-6 overall and 6-2 in the CAC while St. Mary's improved to 15-14 and 3-6 in the conference.

The Seahawks got to Spartan starter Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on two RBI singles. The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-run double to left by senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill).

The Seahawks recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a Jason Turen singled in Justin Rabon. The inning was aided by a Spartan error as the run was unearned. St. Mary's extended the lead to 4-2 with a single run in the fifth on a Ryan D'Antuono sacrifice fly.

York cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the eighth when Bednarczyk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Seahawks got a critical insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and, again, a Spartan error played a big role in the St. Mary's score. The green and white received a lead-off triple from Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) in the top of the ninth. He came around to score on a Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) sacrifice fly. However, York would not be able to get the equalizer across as their six-game conference win streak was snapped.

Brian Briggs earned the win as he improves to 5-0. He kept the Spartans off-balance all day as he allowed just three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Caleb Simms earned the save, his fourth, as he allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of action.

Frisch suffered his first loss of the year as he allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and a season-high four walks in his seven inning stint. He is now 4-1 for the campaign.

The top three hitters in the St. Mary's lineup, Turen, Jay Benedetti, and Mike Broccolino combined to go 7-for-15 with four RBI, and a run scored. Trey Cole also had two hits as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Rabon scored three runs as he drew a trio of walks in the game.

The Spartans were limited to a season-low four hits. Bednarczyk was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Young drove in the Spartans' other run. Freshman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and sophomore Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) had the Spartans' other hits in the game. Craig and Bednarczyk each hit a double while Maxim had a triple as three of York's four hits were for extra bases.

The Spartans still control their own destiny in the CAC title chase. If York is able to defeat Catholic on Friday and St. Mary's on Saturday, they will earn the number one seed in the tournament, even if they finish with an identical record to Mary Washington. The Spartans would own the second tie breaker with the Eagles if they both finish 8-2 in the conference.

York returns to action on Thursday when they step out of conference to face Dickinson College. Game time in Carlisle is set for 3:30 pm.?
