YORK, PA-The York College baseball squad
received another stellar effort from a starting pitcher as senior
Chris Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) twirled eight innings of
two-hit baseball in York's 6-0 shutout of Mary Washington on
Sunday in York. The Spartans, winners of nine straight, improve to
16-4 overall and 4-1 in the CAC while the Eagles fall to 12-7-1
overall and 4-2 in the league.
The green and white struck first in the second
inning as senior Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) stroked a
two-run single to left, putting the hosts up 2-0. York added to the
lead in the sixth thanks to a Mike Santoro (Manalapan,
NJ/Manalapan) sacrifice fly and a Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson
Station, NY/St. Anthony's) RBI single to left center as the
Spartans seized control of the game.
That would be more than enough for Brower as he
gave up a single and a walk in the third and a single in the
seventh, keeping the Eagles in check during his eight innings.
Brower improved to 3-1 with the win as he lowers his ERA to 0.99 in
a team-high 36.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked
just one as he has won three straight decisions.
The Spartan offense added insurance in the
seventh thanks to a two-run opposite field double off the bat of
freshman Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield).
Eric Wilkins went the distance for the Eagles as
he allowed six runs, five earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts
and two walks. He is now 0-1 for the season.
The Spartan offense was paced by Young, Ryan
Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove), and Santoro as they each collected
two hits. Young added two RBI and a run scored while Poff scored
once for York. Santoro contributed a run scored and an RBI.
Riley Gorman and Chris Anderson each had a
single for the Eagles.
The Spartans' nine game win streak is the
longest in 10 years but is just half way to the school record of
18, established by the 1991 Spartan squad.
York returns to action on Monday as they host
Elizabethtown in a non-conference contest. First pitch from Jaquet
Field is set for 3:30 pm.
