FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College baseball
team saw their six game win streak come to an end as the University
of Mary Washington Eagles defeated the Spartans 5-3 in Capital
Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon in
Fredericksburg, VA. The Spartans fall to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in the
CAC while the Eagles improve to 6-4-1 and 1-0 in the
conference.
The green and white struck first with two runs
in the top of the second inning as freshman Mike Connolly
(Selden, NY/Newfield) ripped a two-run single, scoring
Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and
Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St.
Anthony's). Anzalone and Maxim had each singled to
set the stage for Connolly's two-run knock.
The Eagles reached Spartan starter Chris
Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) for a single run in
the fourth on a Chase Towsend RBI single. Mary Washington then took
a 3-2 lead in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer from catcher Nick
Espinosa.
York tied the game at three in the sixth as
Maxim singled and went to third on a Mark Miloski (Calverton,
NY/Riverhead) double to left. Maxim then came home on a wild pitch.
York would be unable to plate Miloski as Eagle starter Brett
Diamond got a strikeout, a ground out, and a fly ball to escape
further damage.
Mary Washington got a pair of unearned runs in
the sixth thanks to a Spartan error. Those two runs closed out the
scoring as the green and white managed just one one hit over the
final three innings.
Diamond earned the win as he tossed a completed
game, allowing three runs on nine hits. He struck out eight and
walked two as he improves to 2-1 with the win. Brower absorbed the
loss as he falls to 1-1. The Spartan senior allowed five runs,
three earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Sophomore Matt Austin (Shrewsbury,
PA/Susquehannock) pitched the final two innings and was
dominate as he sat down all six Eagles he faced, including two on
strikes.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Mike Murphy
as the right fielder was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Tom
McDermott was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Espinosa was
1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Anzalone, Maxim, and Connolly each had a pair of
hits for the Spartans. Connolly added two RBI while Maxim scored
twice for the green and white.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday as
they are set to host the Eagles in the second game of the
home-and-home series. The game will also be the much awaited home
debut for the 2007 Spartans. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
