PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The York College baseball
team improved to 3-3 as they downed Concordia Moorhead 15-3 in the
second game of their five-game Florida stretch in Port Charlotte,
FL. The Cobbers fall to 1-3 while the Spartans have won two
straight and three of their last four.
The green and white wasted little time in
jumping on Cobber starter Anthony Stern. Senior Jeff Young
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) was hit by a pitch to open the
game. After Young stole second, Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia,
MD/River Hill) walked and then both Spartan runners
advanced one base on a Stern wild pitch. Sophomore Ryan
Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) delivered Young with
a sacrifice fly and Bednarczyk scored on an Anthony
Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) single to left.
Young gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead in the second
as he drove home Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station,
NY/St. Anthony's) after Maxim singled and stole
second.
The Spartans blew the game wide open in the
sixth as they plated nine runs. The green and white banged out five
hits in the inning while the outburst was aided by two Concordia
errors. Maxim had a trio of RBI in the frame while Bednarczyk had a
pair of RBI. Poff and Anzalone each had one run batted in during
the inning.
That offensive outburst would be more than
enough for Spartan ace Chris Brower (Mont Clare,
PA/Spring-Ford) as the senior righty scattered four hits
in six innings of work as he improves to 1-0. Brower struck out
three as he is now 11 punchouts short of breaking the York College
career record for strikeouts.
York added two runs in the seventh on
Poff's first home run of the year and one more in the eight.
Concordia got on the board in the seventh with a run while they
closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the
ninth.
Stern took the loss for the Cobbers as he
allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Stern
struck out two and walked two others. Chris Fellows relieved Stern
and was tagged for five runs on two hits with four walks and one
strikeout in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Poff and Maxim led the Spartan offense with
three hits each. Poff was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored
while Maxim was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Young
chipped in two hits, two runs, and an RBI while Anzalone was
2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Ryan Johnson led the Cobbers as he was 2-for-3
with an RBI and a runs scored. Brian Knoblauch added a two-run
double for Concordia.
The Spartans continue their trip on Thursday
when they face Alma (MI) in their third game in Port Charlotte.
Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
