Five Spartans Remain in Contention After Day One of Regionals

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. - The York women's wrestling team sits in eighth place out of 16 teams with five wrestlers still in contention after day one of the NCAA Super Region 2 Championship hosted by West Liberty University on Friday.

No. 7 Lehigh leads the team standings with 63 points, followed closely by Ursinus (61), Lock Haven (57), Eastern (52.5) and West Liberty (48.5) in the top-five. York accumulated 33.5 points to finish eighth after day one.

Maura White (34-4) and Peyton Fries (27-4) both advanced to the championship semifinals in their respective weight classes after day one with White at 138 lbs. and Fries at 207 lbs. White went 2-0 on the day with a technical and a fall to extend her win streak to 21-straight. She will take on Ragan Retell (ESU) in the semifinals on Saturday. Fries went 1-0 on the day with a fall against Patricia Deslandes (ESU) and will take on Jamie Shapton (WLU) in the semifinals on Saturday

A trio of Spartans remain in contention in the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes and in pursuit of one of the top-three automatic qualifying spots to nationals. Gisele Ramirez (15-6) went 2-1 at 117 lbs. with a pair of falls and will take on Trinity Howard (WLU) in the consolation quarterfinals. Ashley Knapp (18-10) posted a record of 2-1 at 145 lbs. with a technical fall and a fall, and she will take on Makynna Loepp (Lehigh) in the consolation quarterfinals. Allison Brandt (22-9) went 2-1 at 180 lbs. with a pair of falls and will face Janeyda Ortiz (Cedar Crest) in the consolation quarterfinals.

Three Spartans saw their seasons come to an end after going 0-2 on the day. Kallie Bower (124 lbs.) finished the season with an 18-13 record, Barbara Hartman (131 lbs.) finished 13-13 and Kylie Monroe (160 lbs.) ended her season with a record of 19-10.

Competition resumes at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
