Seven Spartans Earn MAC All-Commonwealth Honors

Muston, Kluegel, and Garabo earn individual honors

YORK, PA – The York College women's lacrosse program received good news on Tuesday as seven Spartans earned MAC All-Commonwealth honors as announced by the conference office.

In addition to the seven all-conference awards, Zoe Kluegel was named the Attacker of the Year, Bella Garabo earned the Goalie of the Year and Jen Muston was recognized as the league's Coach of the Year.

Kluegel, Garabo, Sydney Mentzer, Madison Kurland, and Sarah Christensen were selected as first-team MAC All-Commonwealth honorees. Gianna Huet and Christina Vendelis were selected as second-team honors.

Garabo continues to add to her career honors in earning her second straight MAC Commonwealth Goalie of the Year award. She is now a three-time MAC All-Commonwealth selection. As a grad student for the Spartans, Garabo has started all 19 games and accumulated 953:03 minutes in net, posted a goals against average of 8.31 and a save percentage of .520 against a schedule featuring eight teams that earned bids to the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament. Garabo owns a career record of 41-14, a goals against average of 7.41 and a save percentage of .531.

Garabo earned the MAC Commonwealth Tournament MVP for the second straight year after York's tight 8-7 win over Stevenson in the title tilt.

Kluegel earns her first major individual award with the Attacker of the Year. Kluegel has had a fantastic year with 54 points on 40 goals and 14 assists in her 19 games heading into the NCAA Tournament. She added two game-winning goals and a player down goal. Kluegel has 10 ground balls, four caused turnovers and one draw control. Kluegel was 5-for-11 in free position chances for the year. She earns MAC All-Commonwealth honors for the second straight year after being a second-team selection as a sophomore.

Mentzer had another tremendous season as she successfully built off her 2023 MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year award. She earns first-team MAC All-Commonwealth honors for her second year. Her numbers aren't as eye-popping as they were last year but the only reason for that was that she missed five games due to a mid-season injury. Mentzer heads into the NCAA Tournament with 42 points on 35 goals and seven assists while she 8-for-10 in free position shots this spring. Mentzer also has 24 ground balls, 24 caused turnovers, and 53 draw controls for the campaign.

Kurland makes her first appearance on the all-conference teams and the honor is well deserved for the Spartan senior. Kurland started all 19 games as she has 44 points on 30 goals and 14 assists while she is 6-for-11 in free position chances. She also has 16 ground balls, three caused turnovers and 28 draw controls. In her career, she has played in 76 games with 57 starts and has scored 143 points on 92 goals and 51 assists. Kurland has three game-winning goals, six power play goals, two player down goals, 71 ground balls, 36 caused turnovers and 64 draw controls.

Christensen proved again why she is one of the best defenders in the region. She led the Spartans to having a goals against average of 7.84 which led the Commonwealth. Christensen owns team highs of 67 draw controls and 30 caused turnovers. She also picked up 39 ground balls, scored two goals and added two assists for four points. She was 1-for-1 in free position shots for the year.

Christensen earns her second MAC All-Commonwealth honor as she was a second-team pick last year. For her career, Christensen has 116 ground balls, 79 draw controls, 70 caused turnovers, 12 points on five goals and seven assists in her 76 career games for York.

Huet earns her first MAC All-Commonwealth honor as she enters the NCAA Tournament as York's leading scorer. She has 57 points on 38 goals and 19 assists. Huet has four game-winning goals, two free position goals, 11 ground balls and two draw controls. Huet has recorded at least one point in 18 of her 19 games. She had four games in which she scored five points as her season-high.

Huet has 134 career points on 80 goals and 54 assists in her 59 career games.

Vendelis came back for her graduate year and she made the most of it in earning MAC All-Commonwealth honors for the second straight year. She played in all 19 games with 27 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and 45 draw controls from her defender position. She was part of the Commonwealth's best defensive unit. She registered a career-high eight draw controls in the March 27 win over nationally ranked Christopher Newport. Vendelis has 121 draw controls, 83 ground balls and 56 caused turnovers in her 75 career games.

Muston earns her third MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year award and her seventh conference Coach of the Year overall. Muston has recruited and coached six MAC Commonwealth positional Players of the Year in York's four years in the league. The Spartans have won 29 straight games against Commonwealth opponents in regular season and post-season games.

York enters the NCAA Tournament riding a school-record tying ten game win streak. York will try to make it 11 wins in row as they face Johnson and Wales (Providence) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday in Middletown, CT at 1:00 pm.
