Five Spartans Place at PA Women’s Collegiate State Championships

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Spartan women's wrestling team finished sixth out of eight teams with five place winners at the Pennsylvania Women's Collegiate State Championships hoisted by East Stroudsburg University on Saturday.

No. 18 East Stroudsburg won the tournament team title with 47 points, followed by No. 10 Lock Haven (39 pts.), Ursinus (26 pts.), Delaware Valley (21 pts.), No. 24 Gannon (17 pts.), York (14 pts.), Cedar Crest (6 pts.) and Alvernia (5 pts.).

Faith Warner (109 lbs.) and Maura White (136 lbs.) each placed second in their respective weight classes to pace the Spartans. Emma Lavalle took fifth at 191 lbs., while Rebekah Patzke (143 lbs.) and Allison Brandt (170 lbs.) each placed sixth.

Warner started her day with a fall and then edged out a 5-4 victory over Tiana Savino (ESU) to earn a spot in the finals. The Spartan freshman drew a tough matchup in the title bout against No. 5 Kaelani Shufeldt (LHU) who pinned Warner to claim the 109-pound title.

White put together a dominant performance on the day as she racked up a pair of falls on her way to the title bout. In the finals, White got pinned by Madison Matta (LHU) to come away with second.

Lavalle got pinned to start her day, but rebounded with a pin of her own over Shelly Gushue (Ursinus) to remain in contention in the consolation bracket. The Spartan then suffered a 10-0 loss to Trinity Monaghan (LHU) to move into the fifth-place match where she pinned Felicia Smith (ESU) to capture fifth and finish the day 2-2.

Patzke went 1-3 on the day to finish sixth at 143 lbs. Her lone win came in convincing fashion as she notched an 11-0 victory over Brooke Dylon of Delaware Valley.

Brandt took sixth at 170 lbs. with a record of 0-3 on the day.

Warner and White have now made it to the title bout in two different tournaments this season as Warner has placed three times and White four times. Brandt has also placed four times, while Patzke and Lavalle have now placed three times each.

The Spartans return to the mat next Sunday in a road dual at Cedar Crest College slated to start at 1 p.m.
