#11 Women's Lacrosse Season Ends on 13-11 Loss to #12 Wesleyan in NCAA 2nd Round

Box Score YORK, Pa. - The 11th-ranked York women's lacrosse team saw their fantastic 2022 campaign come to a close on Sunday at Kinsley Field as they came up just short in a 13-11 loss to No. 12 Wesleyan in the NCAA Second Round.

Despite coming up on the wrong side of a 46-20 shot margin in a lop-sided possession battle that favored Wesleyan, the Spartans never let the game get out of reach. The game did not totally shift into Wesleyan's favor until under nine minutes to play when the Cardinals went on to out-score the Spartans, 4-2, during that span to break out of a 9-9 tie.

Senior captain Chloe MacDonald led all players in the game with a career-high tying six points on four goals and a pair of assists in her final game with the Green and White. Junior Kiersten Blanchard led all players with five draw controls and compiled five points. Bella Garabo stopped 13 shots as the Cardinals put 26 of their season-high 46 on target.

How It Happened
York had the jump on the Cardinals early as the Spartan opened up a 4-2 advantage through one period of play. Anya Litofsky found the back of the net on the game's first possession as she finished off a feed from Kiersten Blanchard. Chloe MacDonald tacked on another for York as the Spartans scored twice in the first five minutes. MacDonald remained hot as she scored twice more in the quarter, both on free-position shots.

The second quarter belonged to the Cardinals as they shut out the Spartans while scoring three times to take a 5-4 edge into halftime. Wesleyan compiled a 14-4 shot advantage and earned several second-chance opportunities with a 10-3 advantage in ground balls. Bella Garabo still managed to stop six shots despite being under immense pressure throughout the period.

York regained some footing in the third quarter as they dominated the draw, winning six of eight. Riley Roeder and Logan Ward scored 49 seconds apart to cut the deficit to one with 8:00 left in the period. York only managed two more shots in the final eight minutes as Wesleyan tacked on another with 1:09 left to take a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans started the fourth with back-to-back tallies by Gianna Huet and Jenna Cholowinski to tie the score, 9-9, with 9:41 left. The Cardinals went on to score twice in the next two minutes and won four of the final six draw controls, which put York at a disadvantage the rest of the way. Blanchard scored twice for York down the stretch, but the Sparatans struggled to get enough stops to flip the momentum as Wesleyan edged out the win.
