Softball Splits Saturday Pair with Hood

YORK, PA – The York College Spartan softball squad suffered a split on Saturday against Hood in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday in York. The Blazers outlasted York 8-7 in the opener and York exacted a measure of revenge with a 9-0, five inning win in the nightcap.

The Spartans are now 9-6 overall and in the Commonwealth. The Blazers are 7-11 overall and 6-8 in the league. The game two win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Green and White.

 

Game One

How It Happened:

• The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to an Alyssa Harhigh triple followed by an error on the Blazers as York took the 1-0 lead.

• The Blazers got on the board in the fourth as they loaded the bases with three hits and then got a two-run double from Lindsay Wilson. York answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take a short-lived 3-2 lead.

• The Blazers blew the game wide open in the fifth with five runs on five hits. Wilson had another two-run double as Hood took a 7-3 lead. York got two back in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a two-run, line drive home run to left center, cutting the Hood lead to 7-5.

• York got one more back in the sixth as Daphney Adams scored Harhigh from second thanks to an RBI double.

• The Blazers got a big insurance run in the top of the seventh as Colleen Blasko had a sacrifice fly to score Belle Bortner.

• York got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a Harhigh RBI single to left. It wouldn't be enough as York dropped their fourth straight game.

• The Spartans were a bit unlucky in the game as they had seven-line drive outs in the game.

 

Spartan Leaders

Junior Alyssa Harhigh tied her career high with four hits including her third triple of the year … junior Hannah Vogt had her best day of the year as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored on her first home run of the year, a ball that wasted no time leaving the yard … Natalie Decena went 2-for-4 with two runs scored … Elle Meyer was 2-for-4 … Shyla Pastore had two RBI in the game … Kaela Fritz was 2-for-3 with a run scored … junior ace Taylor Lindsay allowed a career-high seven earned runs on 11 hits in her 4.1 innings of work.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans took advantage of a Hood error in the bottom of the first as Alyssa Harhigh scored on a Taylor Lindsay RBI single with two outs.

• York made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Elle Meyer drilled an RBI double to right to score Kaela Fritz who had opened the inning with a single.

• The Spartans had one of their biggest innings of the year in the fourth as they plated seven runs on seven hits and one Hood error. Meyer had a two-run double down the left field line to start the scoring. Harhigh followed with an RBI single. Daphney Adams then had a two-run triple to center to keep the inning going. Lindsay had a two-run homer to left to close out the scoring.

Senior Shyla Pastore picked up her first complete game shutout as she was brilliant in game two … Pastore allowed one hit with three strikeouts and a walk in her five innings of work … Elle Meyer led the offense as she was 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run scored and a pair of doubles … Alyssa Harhigh was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI … Daphney Adams was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored … Taylor Lindsay had two hits and three RBI … Kaela Fritz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

 

Notes

The Spartans are now 21-3 all-time against the Blazers … York is now third in the MAC Commonwealth as they are one game back of Stevenson and 3.0 games behind Alvernia as the Golden Wolves lead the league at 13-3 … the Spartans had a season-high 15 hits in the game-one loss to the Blazers … the nine runs scored in game two set a new season high for runs scored … York hit their third and fourth home runs of the year in the two games … York did not striket out or walk in game two … Shyla Pastore's one hit shutout was the lowest number of hits allowed this year … York has posted four shutouts in 14 games this year … during their four game losing streak, the Spartans had allowed 34 runs on 50 hits in 29 innings … junior Alyssa Harhigh continues to lead the league in hitting at .563 with 17 runs scored, 14 RBI, six doubles and three triples.

The Spartans return to the field on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Dallas, PA to face the Misericordia Cougars in a MAC Cross-Over twin bill. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 pm.
