Softball Splits Closely Contested Doubleheader at Widener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTER, Pa. - The York College softball team split Saturday's MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Widener with a 4-1 comeback win in game one, followed by a 1-0 loss in game two.

Team records

York 5-1 (5-1 MAC)

Widener 6-6 (2-4 MAC)

Game 1

York 4, Widener 1

WP: Taylor Lindsay (3-0)

LP: Kait Jaworski (2-5)

How it happened

The Spartans made a late surge to pull off a come-from-behind victory in extra innings. Trailing 1-0 with two outs away in the top of the seventh, Emily Netterville came through with a game-tying pinch hit home run and the Spartans held off the Pride in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extras.

Feeling the pressure from the seventh-inning Spartan heroics, Widener wilted defensively in the top of the eighth and York took full advantage. Widener committed two errors on the first three batters of the eighth inning, allowing Elle Meyer to score from second on an Alyssa Harhigh single to left field. After Harhigh, Daphney Adams tripled to center to allow Harhigh to score and then Hannah Vogt came through with an RBI single to left field to bring Adams in from third.

The Pride made some noise in the bottom of the eighth as their first batter reached on an error, but on the next batter, Taylor Lindsay started the 1-4-3 double play before retiring the next batter to seal the victory.

Game 2

Widener 1, York 0

WP: Jennifer Sieminski (2-1)

LP: Shyla Pastore (2-1)

How it happened

Both offenses struggled to get anything going through the first four innings. York's lone baserunner through the first four frames was thrown out at second, while Adams also caught Widener in a steal attempt back in the first inning.

With one out away in the bottom of the fifth and the game destined for extra innings once again, Malia Calciano suddenly broke up the scoreless tie with one swing of the bat as she homered to center field to give the Pride the 1-0 lead. Shyla Pastore would go on to retire the final five batters in order following the home run, but the Spartans failed to make any noise of their own as they failed to put a runner in scoring position through the final two innings.

Up Next

The Spartans will return home on Tuesday to complete the four-game set with Widener as game one of Tuesday's twinbill is set for 3 p.m.

Notes

Following the game one victory, York clinched its first 5-0 start since 2011 … Daphney Adams led the offense with three hits on the day as she went 3-for-6 with two extra-base hits and six total bases … two Spartans approached the door step of hitting the century mark in two different statistical categories on the day as Taylor Lindsay sits on 99 career strikeouts and Shyla Pastore has 99 career hits.
