YORK, PA – The York College baseball opened their 2020 home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Elmira College on a sunny, crisp Sunday at Jaquet Field. The Spartans won the opener 12-5 and completed the sweep with a 14-5 win in the nightcap.

The Spartans improve to 5-4 overall as they have won three straight and five of their last six.

How It Happened

• The Spartans open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Davaughn Reid doubled to right to lead off the inning. Elmira got the next two outs but sophomore lead-off hitter Austin Denlinger doubled to plate Reid with the game's first run.

• The Spartans exploded for four runs in the fourth inning to push out to a 5-0 lead. Jack Barry singled home Jimmy Wiegers for the first run of the frame. Rob Acierno plated the next run with an RBI ground out and Bailey Doan capped the uprising with a two-run double to left center.

• Elmira cut into the lead with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the fifth. The big blow came via a Jansen Crossley three run blast as the Soaring Eagles trimmed the York lead back to a run.

• The Green and White put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth with a five-spot. Luke Turner had a two-run double to start the scoring. Acierno added an RBI double while Denlinger drew a bases loaded walk.

• Elmira nicked the Spartan bullpen for a single run in the top of the eighth but York got two back in the bottom of the frame with RBIs from Brandon White and Barry.

How It Happened

• Elmira got on the board in the top of the first courtesy of a Tommy Fogarty RBI ground out scoring Sam Plaugher who walked early in the inning.

• The Spartans answered with a three-run bottom of the second as Austin Denlinger smacked an opposite field bases loaded triple to give York a 3-1 lead. York got four more runs in the third with a collection of hits and walks. The Spartans got their four runs with three hits while they also had two walks and a hit batter. Luke Turner had an RBI double in the frame while Sal D'Onofrio had a two-out, two-run single.

• Elmira crept back into the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth including a bases loaded squeeze for their second run. The Spartans tacked on three more runs in the fourth without a hit as York drew four walks, benefited from a wild pitch while they also had a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3.

• York closed out the seven-inning game with a four-run sixth inning. Davaughn Reid and Bailey Doan had RBI singles in the frame while Denlinger had an RBI ground out and Brandon White also had a bases loaded walk.

The Spartans are now 4-0 all-time against Elmira as all four games have come in the last three years … the Spartans drew a season-high 11 walks in game two … for the day, York was issued 16 walks while they struck out just eight times … York reached double figures in runs five times this year and they have won all five … York scored their 14 runs on just nine hits in game two … York had a season-high five doubles in game one.
