Knights Outlast Spartans in CAC Clash

YORK, PA – Southern Virginia uses a big fourth quarter to down the Spartans 76-69 as the York women's basketball team falls to 0-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon in York.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the early going as the first 3:24 only saw three baskets combined by the two teams with York getting their first points at the 6:36 off a Katie McGowan turnaround jumper. The Knights then went on an 11-1 run to stretch the lead out to 15-3. Knights forward Katie Garrish took control of the period and nearly recorded a double-double by the end of the first quarter with 9 points and 7 rebounds as SVU led 20-10.

• The early part of the second was dominated by the Knights as they stretched their lead out to 13 a few times and led 31-18 with 5:30 to go in the half. York then erupted for a 12-0 run of their own with four different Spartans scoring to cut the led to 31-30 late in the period aided by Garrish picking up three fouls and having to sit the final 3:24 of the half. The Knights added five unanswered points to end the half and took a 36-30 advantage into the break.

• The Spartans clamped down on the defensive end holding the Knights to just 26.7% shooting from the floor in the third and forcing six turnovers as they ended up taking their first lead of the game at 44-43 with 3:04 to go off a Bailey Smith jumper. Garrish for the Knights picked up her fourth foul in the period and had to sit the final 3:24 of the period. The teams traded buckets the rest of the quarter and the Knights took a 49-48 lead into the final quarter.

• The Spartans found themselves down double digits in the fourth before back-to-back threes by Logynn Fuller to cut the deficit to give at 66-61 with just under three minutes left in regulation. The Knights went on a 10-2 run to push the lead back to ten points and York could never regain the lead as they only got it as close as five points as SVU picked up the conference victory 76-69.

GAME NOTES

The Spartans are now 7-2 all time against the Knights … this was the first loss to SVU since February 14, 2015and the first home loss at the hands of the Knights in the brief series history between the two teams … the Spartans were hurt on the glass as they were outrebounded 58-40 in the loss … the York defense forced 28 turnovers in the loss … the Spartan defense totaled 18 steals marking the fifth time this season York has had double-digit steals … Katie McGowan led all Spartans in scoring for the for the seventh time this season as she tallied 18 to go along with 8 boards … Logynn Fuller and Molly Day also finished in double digits for the Spartans … Bailey Smith came off the bench to give York a lift as she set new career highs in points (6), rebounds (3), and steals (3) … this is the first 0-2 start in CAC play for the Spartans since 2014-15 … the Green and White are now 2-5 at Wolf Gym this season.
